I've noticed this for about a year or more, but have finally gotten frustrated enough to try to fix it... Please help, I don't know where to look.
When typing, occasional characters drop. It's not the keyboard - I've swapped a few over the years, and it isn't user error, I use mechanical keyboards in several setups and only experience this problem on my gentoo PC.
My mouse will occasionally stop working. I've found I have to unplug / replug the USB receiver to get it going again.
For example, while typing this all has gone well except for "orking" in the above line - I had to go back and retype those letters in "working" because they just didn't make it to the screen.
Another very odd observation related to USB - If I have plugged anything in after a fresh boot, Steam games become super slow. I typically get ~70fps, but if I unplug / replug the mouse, I get ~10 fps until I issue a usbreset "USB2.0 HUB" and usbreset "USB Receiver" - I found this trick while trying to debug the issues...
Also - sometimes a character from the keyboard gets stuck on repeat - in the above line, I had to fix "unnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnplug"...
I have recently sync'd and updated w/out any problems.

Do you mean that this is a different physical PC or even complete (PC, periphery, Monitor)?
Because to mee, this sound like some hardware problem.
Did you try different desktop enviroments or terminal only?

This is occurring with a few different keyboards, but the same PC. I've used multiple USB ports on the PC. The keyboards exhibit no problem on other PCs / laptops.
I have a very hard time believing it's a hardware problem... given that the usbreset commands can snap it out of it when Steam gets angry, it seems like a service somewhere is getting jacked up - pardon my technical jargon.
I'm looking for pointers as to how to diagnose what's going on. I can induce the problem with Steam simply by hot swapping a USB device a couple times. While in the buggy state, I can pull logs and peek & poke at things before issuing the usbreset commands. From that I can share information and maybe the forums can help me diagnose it.
I just don't know where to look... something related to USB on this machine is not up to snuff...

Recently I've noticed my usb wireless mouse and my usb keyboard have started to skip clicks/keys under heavy load. This definitely wasn't there a few months back. I suspect it's a kernel scheduling change as those were very common with my old, very very old computer, which only worked well under load when using ck-sources which are no more.

never mind - misread again 
but, for quite some time i noticed that while doing paste with middle click, that it'll create a double entry of the same copy !

Same here. I changed batteries and whatever until realizing it was happening due to emerge running in background...
I bet my behind it's another change in scheduling algorithms in the kernel. Didn't those people get tired?

OK - here is everything I can think of that might be of use... Please let me know if anyone wants to see anything else.
FWIW, this does feel like a scheduling issue. Are there tweaks I should apply? I'm running Zen-Sources - should I go vanilla, something else?

I've tried a number of things, including RT kernel sources, gentoo-sources 6.6.30, and 6.9.3, and zen-sources , and 6.8.9.
It seem moving from full tickless dynamic to a 1000 Hz tick seems to have made things better. Doing so and changnig from zen-sources to gentoo-sources seems better still.
I can't say I've used the system enough in the latest config to ensure the problem w/ USB is solved completely, but it does seem better... |

So I was happy with Gentoo Sources for a bit, but over the last couple days, I've run into a lot of the ssssssssssssssssssssssssstuck or msng keystrokes again - but I've been using the machine a lot. It seems changing to Gentoo Sources has made a marked improvement, but has not solved it.
In the meantime, I've plugged my USB hardware into different ports, and am even going through a USB A/B switch now. The ports on the PC are direct to the motherboard.
I've run into this problem with and without the A/B switch, and on all ports. It's effecting a mouse and keyboard that behave perfectly on a vanilla Dell Latitude windows laptop.
Can anyone help me diagnose this? I'm not certain how to go about monitoring and isolating the problem.

The latest observation - during periods where the keyboard is especially unreliable, if I unplug it, and move it to another port, the problem is resolved for quite some time.
This is true if the problem starts while plugged into a 2.0 and moved to a 3.0 port, a 3.0 to 2.0, a 2.0 to 2.0, or a 3.0 to 3.0. The only combination I have not tried is using the PC's USB C port, but I don't have a C-to-C cable...
But otherwise, this problem remains a recurring problem. |
