|

Hi everybody,
very new to gentoo here. I'm trying to install gentoo on an old Mac (Intel Core 2 Duo and NVIDIA GeForce 320M, I know it's going to take for ever to compile but I still want to try) through bootable usb drive. I have flashed the minimal installation CD into a usb drive and when I try to boot from it on the Mac it gets stuck on a blank screen. After few minutes the vent starts to spin crazy and it overheats.
I have already installed different linux distros on this laptop (arch, debian and even ubuntu) and everything worked well.
Anyone knows what's the problem? As far as I understand, installing gentoo on apple machines has awlays been problematic.
Thank in advance |

Not sure why you're getting trouble with the minimal Gentoo CD but you can install Gentoo from any live ISO.

Using binary packages would help a lot in that regard. |

Where can I find documentation / tutorials on how to do that? |

Quoting Gentoo website - Getting started with Gentoo:
gentoo.org - Getting started with Gentoo wrote: | Step 1: Boot a live environment.
Choose between a lean Gentoo installation CD, a LiveCD/DVD, LiveGUI USB, or any distribution you like to perform the installation. |
The Gentoo handbook is all you need, it even has a very detailed "Choosing the right installation medium" section.
If you want to stick with a Gentoo based ISO, you could also try the LiveGUI ISO from the Downloads section. If you want to use another "minimal" ISO, official Arch Linux ISO is fine too.
I don't have any experience with Gentoo on MacBook so I can't help you regarding the original issue (minimal CD not booting), hopefully some other users will. |
