[Administrator note: this post, and the first 3 responses, were originally attached to the unrelated topic Plasma 6 upgrade blocked, should I mask it?. -Hu]

i have tried to install plasma 6 two times, compilation and installation completed successfully both times, but on reboot kwin segfaults, plasmashell segfaults, never has been able to login into kde with wayland or X. I used a hardened profile. I never could undestand and fix the segfaults.

At last I masked plasma 6 and went back to plasma 5.

That sounds like a different problem entirely. This thread was about users unable to satisfy Portage's dependency resolver. tranquilcool's problem is that the applications built successfully, but did not work. tranquilcool: are you looking to solve this problem or only to report that you are dissatisfied with your experience with Plasma 6? If you want to solve the problem, I will move these posts to a separate thread.

Sorry if I put it the the other/wrong way.
Of course I would like to and get plasma 6 to work. kwin segfaults in qquickpixmaprea, plasmashell segfaults in ksplashqml.
I was just so frustrated that after spending hours fo 2 installs I had to go back to plasma 5. It was my way of saying mask it.

Split as offered. However, as asturm noted, you have not provided anything we could use to help you, so there is currently no way to make progress on solving this.

It's okay, I am not on plasma 6 any longer, so I can't send logs. The only thing I remember from dmesg when I was on plasma 6 was: kwin segfaults in qquickpixmaprea, plasmashell segfaults in ksplashqml

It's okay until Plasma 5 will be dropped from Portage.

Maybe you want to at least supply your emerge --info for a quick check?

Thanks for your reply. Installs without hitches, but can't just get it to work. with this setup plasma 5 just works!

Could you try get some error output from logs / output when running plasmashell in the terminal?

We can hopefully help you then attach gdb.

FWIW, I've not heard of any other crashes, even on eccentric setups, so while I fully believe you're having issues, it does mean will need your help to get to the bottom of it.

I can't even login, it crashes at boot. I will reinstall plasma 6 and see if I can have some logfiles.

Try to set the USE-Flag "kf6compat" globally in /etc/portage/make.conf, this should resolve your blocks.
Eventually you still need to unmask it in /etc/portage/profile/use.mask.

gdb plasmashell:

qt.qpa.xcb: Could not connect to display
qt.qpa.plugin: From 6.5.0, xcb-cursor0 or libxcb-cursor0 is needed to load the Qt xcb platform plugin.
qta.qpa.plugin: could not load the Qt platform xcb in "" even though it is found.
this application failed to start because no Qt platform could be initialized. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.
Available plugins are vkkhrdisplay, vnc, linuxfb, xcb, offscreen, minimal, wayland-egl, wayland.

well, just can't seem to solve this problem. took hours to install. is it driving me crazy!

Plasmashell is jumping to a null pointer, probably as a result of an improperly initialized function pointer. A stack backtrace at the time of the crash might be useful, but first you need to find how to trigger the crash under gdb.

Please run the "bt" command in gdb when you're at that prompt to get the full bt.

We may need you to build plasmashell and some of kde-*/* and dev-qt/* with debug symbols (https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Debugging). I appreciate your patience here.

Ah! Feel like we're getting somewhere now. Please build as much as dev-qt/* and kde-*/* (just the ones you already have installed) with debug symbols as you're willing, excluding qtwebengine. We could refine the list but it's easier to say "just build everything Qt and KDE you have installed" and it avoids whackamole. If your machine is slow, you want at least dev-qt/qtcore:6, dev-qt/qtdeclarative:6, kde-plasma/libplasma, and kde-frameworks/ksvg.

Then provide a new backtrace just as you did above. Thanks. It likely goes wrong in ksvg.

of course you meant dev-qt/qtbase:6, not qtcore

I have reinstalled most of the kde-plasma and dev-qt packages, but I still can't get it solved.
I wonder all the success stories I read about plasma 6! I just can't get it done, I am no IT guy and this makes it even harder to fix it.
now am reinstalling with debug symbols. will report back. Thanks.

Thanks!

I've asked someone to take a look, but while we wait for them: I wonder if you could try https://invent.kde.org/frameworks/ksvg/-/commit/74f9f9cbd226407f8cde08c5cd5a711444e2775d.patch in /etc/portage/patches/kde-frameworks/ksvg/maybe-crash-scaling.patch and then rebuild ksvg? I don't think it's going to help but it's the only commit since the last release and it touches cachedBackground which is relevant to the crash.

Thank you for having someone check it out for me.
The patch is already present in ksvg-6.3.1
