[SOLVED] install from usb ... how to become root???

So far so good, but when booting from the usb I seem to not be root (please be patient as I am an old fart with a recent stroke and have perceptual issues). So how do I get an xterm in which I am root? Please be as explicit and complete as possible (as I am easily confused).

You should be able to to run sudo su to elevate yourself to root.

THANKS, that worked (would be nice for that magic to be given in the documentation; whereas "Alongside the kernel, boot options..." is mentioned therein, there is no indication of appropriate syntax or examples for how to actually boot with an option -- neither do the F1 or F2 keys work as described ).
