The update went smoothly, once it was finished I ran "emerge @preserved-rebuild" and then I had some dependency issues:

@adsturm thanks for that hint.
I couldn't figure out where those blocks on my system came from.
For the history and documentation:
Even after regenerating my world file i had to remove
kde-plasma/khotkeys and kde-plasma/libkworkspace
Now all blocks are solved for me. _________________ Always code as if the person who ends up maintaining your code will be a violent psychopath who knows where you live. |

In practice you would have seen the 'B' block relegated to 'b' which Portage would have been able to auto-resolve (by removing those above packages automatically).
EDIT: Ah no, that was for the update case, not the @preserved-rebuild which will always pick up cruft you still have on your system without prior running of --depclean. |
