PostPosted: Thu Jul 04, 2024 5:34 pm    Post subject: ffplay cannot play video, only audio (nvidia-drivers) Reply with quote

I have several video files in different formats which are known to be working. ffplay accepts them, plays the audio, but does not display any video. I've searched the internet and found nothing useful.

Code:

$ ffplay working.avi

Notice "Failed to initialize a hardware accelerated renderer: Couldn't find matching render driver". I've found another post in this forums with no replies (which I accidently bumped whilst trying to post this as a new thread). Other online resources indicate to check for SDL (I have both sdl and nvenc USE flag enabled and nvidia-drivers installed).

Another video (random video from wikipedia, https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Seedlings.webm):

Hi,

I wouldn't use ffplay to play videos, but vlc, mpv, mplayer... etc

Working with ffmpeg and hardware acceleration for decoding is a bit of a nightmare IMHO. You can have a look at the nvidia docs https://docs.nvidia.com/video-technologies/video-codec-sdk/12.0/ffmpeg-with-nvidia-gpu/index.html

Unless you have a compelling reason to use ffplay, consider another player

Kind regards

I cannot answer any of your questions except to say that I researched your issues and I agree that there is very little info on it, other than the previous unanswered post you referred to. I have an Nvidia card, use proprietary Nvidia driver, and had no issues paying the Seedling video you linked.
All of my use flags appear to be identical at a glance. I do have a lot of Vulkan stuff enabled/installed due to wine and games.

Here is my output of:
Code:
equery uses libsdl
[ Legend : U - final flag setting for installation]
[        : I - package is installed with flag     ]
[ Colors : set, unset                             ]
 * Found these USE flags for media-libs/libsdl-1.2.68:
 U I
 + + X          : Add support for X11
 + + abi_x86_32 : 32-bit (x86) libraries
 + + alsa       : Add support for media-libs/alsa-lib (Advanced Linux Sound Architecture)
 + + joystick   : Control joystick support (disable at your own risk)
 + + opengl     : Add support for OpenGL (3D graphics)
 + + sound      : Control audio support (disable at your own risk)
 - - test       : Enable dependencies and/or preparations necessary to run tests (usually
                  controlled by FEATURES=test but can be toggled independently)
 + + video      : Control video support (disable at your own risk)

I am not a programmer. I just wanted to point out, in case it helps you figure out how SDL queries for and decides on a hardware renderer, that the error message comes from ffmpeg.c:
https://github.com/FFmpeg/FFmpeg/blob/master/fftools/ffplay.c
Code:
#ifdef SDL_HINT_VIDEO_X11_NET_WM_BYPASS_COMPOSITOR
        SDL_SetHint(SDL_HINT_VIDEO_X11_NET_WM_BYPASS_COMPOSITOR, "0");
#endif
        if (hwaccel && !enable_vulkan) {
            av_log(NULL, AV_LOG_INFO, "Enable vulkan renderer to support hwaccel %s\n", hwaccel);
            enable_vulkan = 1;
        }
        if (enable_vulkan) {
            vk_renderer = vk_get_renderer();
            if (vk_renderer) {
#if SDL_VERSION_ATLEAST(2, 0, 6)
                flags |= SDL_WINDOW_VULKAN;
#endif
            } else {
                av_log(NULL, AV_LOG_WARNING, "Doesn't support vulkan renderer, fallback to SDL renderer\n");
                enable_vulkan = 0;
            }
        }
        window = SDL_CreateWindow(program_name, SDL_WINDOWPOS_UNDEFINED, SDL_WINDOWPOS_UNDEFINED, default_width, default_height, flags);
        SDL_SetHint(SDL_HINT_RENDER_SCALE_QUALITY, "linear");
        if (!window) {
            av_log(NULL, AV_LOG_FATAL, "Failed to create window: %s", SDL_GetError());
            do_exit(NULL);
        }

        if (vk_renderer) {
            AVDictionary *dict = NULL;

            if (vulkan_params) {
                int ret = av_dict_parse_string(&dict, vulkan_params, "=", ":", 0);
                if (ret < 0) {
                    av_log(NULL, AV_LOG_FATAL, "Failed to parse, %s\n", vulkan_params);
                    do_exit(NULL);
                }
            }
            ret = vk_renderer_create(vk_renderer, window, dict);
            av_dict_free(&dict);
            if (ret < 0) {
                av_log(NULL, AV_LOG_FATAL, "Failed to create vulkan renderer, %s\n", av_err2str(ret));
                do_exit(NULL);
            }
        } else {
            renderer = SDL_CreateRenderer(window, -1, SDL_RENDERER_ACCELERATED | SDL_RENDERER_PRESENTVSYNC);
            if (!renderer) {
                av_log(NULL, AV_LOG_WARNING, "Failed to initialize a hardware accelerated renderer: %s\n", SDL_GetError());
                renderer = SDL_CreateRenderer(window, -1, 0);
            }
            if (renderer) {
                if (!SDL_GetRendererInfo(renderer, &renderer_info))
                    av_log(NULL, AV_LOG_VERBOSE, "Initialized %s renderer.\n", renderer_info.name);
            }
            if (!renderer || !renderer_info.num_texture_formats) {
                av_log(NULL, AV_LOG_FATAL, "Failed to create window or renderer: %s", SDL_GetError());
                do_exit(NULL);

I also found this:
https://patchwork.ffmpeg.org/project/ffmpeg/patch/1479417528-6109-1-git-send-email-cus@passwd.hu/
Which is an old discussion about whether or not to add a patch to allow fallback to software rendering in case the hardware renderer fails.
Code:
 if (window) {
             SDL_RendererInfo info;
             renderer = SDL_CreateRenderer(window, -1, SDL_RENDERER_ACCELERATED | SDL_RENDERER_PRESENTVSYNC);
+            if (!renderer) {
+                av_log(NULL, AV_LOG_WARNING, "Failed to initialize a hardware accelerated renderer.\n");
+                renderer = SDL_CreateRenderer(window, -1, 0);
+            }
             if (renderer) {
                 if (!SDL_GetRendererInfo(renderer, &info))
                     av_log(NULL, AV_LOG_VERBOSE, "Initialized %s renderer.\n", info.name);

All of this may be totally irrelevant to your issue. I just wanted to offer up some details about where that message comes from in case it helps in any way.
EDIT:

Hammets post reminds me of another thing I was wondering but forgot to mention. How does this affect playing files in full featured video players like VLC etc? Normally, ffplay is just for testing of a file but I assume you are aware of that. The output can be helpful in some cases when working with encoding or playback directly. There are perfectly legitimate uses for it.

Thank you both for the thoughtful replies.

I've emerged mpv and it works. I suppose I'll just use that moving forward, as it's not too heavy. I had not felt the need for a full media player as I rarely play any video (although I have many video files I play them on a separate device, this one just hosts them).

Good to hear you have a solution that works for you. MPV is the lightest of them all, ffplay is not something I would rely on as a media player.

I am the kind of person that wouldn't rest until I figured out why my system had an anomaly. Even if it was just one program that I would never use much, I would at least want to know why. I'd troubleshoot it relentlessly until I figured out why it was happening, even if it turns out that it is expected behavior for my setup. Hopefully MPV is the solution for you and you don't end up down the rabbit hole like I would. : )

Do you have USE=opengl on libsdl2 too? ffplay doesn't use libsdl (aka ibsdl1) bu trather libsdl2, and without that it'll likely fail to create an accelerated window. Given I see you have it off on ffmpeg itself, I assume you haven't set it globally like you typically should (it's default on desktop profiles).

Not that USE=opengl matters for mpv (you want USE=egl or preferably vulkan there, egl is default and vulkan is set by desktop profiles -- to use vulkan you need to adjust mpv configs though, upstream does plan to make it a default in the future).

I've set opengl on make.conf and rebuilt my world set, ffplay no longer displays that warning but still does not play any video.

Code:

$ equery u libsdl2 | grep opengl
+opengl
$ equery u ffmpeg | grep opengl
+opengl

For the record, I did not have any USE flags about opengl or sdl (1 or 2) on my make.conf and my profile is default/linux/amd64/23.0/split-usr (stable).
