Shout out to sqrtd (https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1161025-highlight-a770.html -- though I needed i915/dg2_dmc_ver2_08.bin to make things ok) since otherwise I might not have got graphics to work.
HOWEVER, the cooling fans on my Arc a770 will not spin and that graphics card is starting to cook my system

which seems to indicate firmware for the graphics card gets loaded (ignore iwlwifi above as I don't use that). The fans just never spin and the card heats up... Could it possibly be due to some miss configuration of something, or is it obviously that my graphics card is simply broken

I suspect the latter ... to be absolutely sure that the card really has defective fans, you should simply boot an UbuntuLiveCD (and then do something that loads the graphics) ... if the fans don't work either, you can confidently claim the warranty.

Thanks, I'll do that (the Ubuntu thing).
EDIT:
Attempted to "try Ubuntu" but crashed and burned... Sure it must somehow have been my fault (most everything is) but it seems Ubuntu completely trashed my motherboard so now I'm looking to purchase a replacement. The reason for this rant is simply to hope better for anyone who might be in a similar situation as I am with fans not spinning: BE CAREFUL! |
