Hi all,
After boot, when attempting to unlock my LUKS encrypted root, I am met with:

Wrong password

I am confident that it is the valid password, considering I am capable of unlocking the partition in a liveCD with no issues.
I'm wondering if it could be that I don't have either the right LUKS options or the right cryptographic keys built into the kernel, so it can't use the password.

I might be wrong but
is (still) not supported for / by grub unless patches are used. (https://leo3418.github.io/collections/gentoo-config-luks2-grub-systemd/packages.html for example)
Since you can open it from a livecd, this is probably the issue here.
When you use cryptsetup luksFormat, it defaults to argon2i (or argon2id) unless --pbkdf args is used.

Maximum keyfile size: 8192kB, Maximum interactive passphrase length 512 (characters)
Default PBKDF for LUKS1: pbkdf2, iteration time: 2000 (ms)

Iteration time: 2000, Memory required: 1048576kB, Parallel threads: 4
Default compiled-in device cipher parameters:
loop-AES: aes, Key 256 bits
plain: aes-xts-plain64, Key: 256 bits, Password hashing: sha256
LUKS: aes-xts-plain64, Key: 256 bits, LUKS header hashing: sha256, RNG: /dev/urandom
LUKS: Default keysize with XTS mode (two internal keys) will be doubled. |
from my notes:

cryptsetup luksFormat --cipher serpent-xts-plain64 --key-size 512 --hash sha512 --pbkdf pbkdf2 --iter-time 5000 --use-random /dev/sda1 |
You could try to change the key from argon2id to pbkdf2 ; make sure to backup headers before or have backup at hand.
Code: | cryptsetup luksChangeKey /dev/nvme0n1p2 -S 2 --hash sha256 --pbkdf pbkdf2 --iter-time 5000 |
(re enter your passphrase, this command is used to change pbkdf)
Since your current key is in slot 2, I added "-S 2" to select the slot.
Otherwise you could also use luksAddKey instead, select slot 1 for example (-S 1) and add a whole new passphrase.

If you don't want to modify anything, maybe just try the argon2id support patch for grub first |

Another possibility that affects some people is the use of a password containing characters outside basic ANSI. Entering such a password requires that the loaded keyboard layout now match what was loaded when the volume was first formatted. For some users who prefer a non-English language as their primary language, and who load a keyboard layout accordingly, they may have created the password with a different encoding than is used in the initramfs. |

Unfortunately, while the patch for grub didn't seem to work, switching my key to pbkdf seems to have done the trick. Thanks for your help!

I had considered that, but considering I use basic ANSI symbols and the default US keymap, I didn't think it was the issue. |

You're welcome.
About the patch, I have not tested the argon2i patch myself so maybe it doesn't work at all.
But just an idea, have you reinstalled grub to your nvme drive (nvme0n1p1) after the rebuild with the patch ? (grub-install --recheck --no-floppy (if using bios booting) )
edit: For fun, I replicated your setup with one of my gentoo vm, with argon2id for pbkdf & dracut. (with some difference like dos/mbr used)
I was expecting the same error message but it booted just fine. Without patch.
I guess the patch is needed when one is using full disk encryption (including /boot) but that was not your case so it should have worked with argon2id. Strange, I'm a bit confused now

Strange, I have no clue what I did to that particular install (I've reinstalled as I wanted to experiment with musl/LLVM) I've done essentially the same thing, at least in terms of rootfs encryption with this new install, and no issues.

I had reinstalled grub but, as you know, it hadn't resolved the issue. Oh well, another "unsolved" mystery. Hopefully my post helps another lost soul |
