PostPosted: Tue Aug 06, 2024 8:53 am    Post subject: [Solved]DNS resolve fail Reply with quote

I installed gentoo as server. I am using it with CLI. When I was installing KVM and some programs, DNS resolv sudden fail. At first, only wget and links failed but after a few hours, emerge get started to fail. /etc/resolv.d permission and nameservers are properly set-up. I checked dmesg but nothing special. I restart server but it fails again. The strange is that only resolving new DNS fails. Since I always ping gentoo.org to check connection, gentoo.org is cached on pc before problem happen. Ping at gentoo.org or with ip address works fine but trying with new address doesn't work. Here is output of emerge, wget and ping:
Code:
SERVER25 ~ # emerge --sync
>>> Syncing repository 'gentoo' into '/var/db/repos/gentoo'...
 * Using keys from /usr/share/openpgp-keys/gentoo-release.asc
 * Refreshing keys via WKD ...                                                                                   [ ok ]
!!! getaddrinfo failed for 'rsync.gentoo.org': [Errno -2] Name or service not known
>>> Starting rsync with rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage...

Action: sync for repo: gentoo, returned code = 1

Code:

I think it started to fail after emerging qemu and libvirt
Since my network doesn't support IPv6, I think it because of dnsmasq USE option 'ipv6'. dnsmasq was automatically installed while emerging libvirt. But emerge fail with require of USE flags. So I add the USE flags. Here is "/etc/portage/package.use/libvirt" :
Code:
# required by app-emulation/libvirt-10.3.0-r1::gentoo[virt-network]
# required by dev-python/libvirt-python-10.3.0::gentoo
>=net-dns/dnsmasq-2.90 script ipv6
# required by app-crypt/swtpm-0.8.2::gentoo
# required by app-emulation/libvirt-10.3.0-r1::gentoo[qemu]
# required by dev-python/libvirt-python-10.3.0::gentoo
>=net-libs/gnutls-3.8.0 tools pkcs11

* Notice: My emerge mirror servers are just fine. My PC is something wrong.

Welcome to the forums.

What is the output of cat -n /etc/resolv.conf ; dig rsync.gentoo.org ; dig rsync.gentoo.org @8.8.8.8?

It's a part of the 'net-dns/bind-tools' package (I should have mentioned that, too, since I guessed it was somewhat likely that you would not have it yet).

I add these on /etc/hosts first to emerge net-dns/bind-tools :
Code:
178.249.213.2  distfiles.gentoo.org
89.238.71.4    keys.gentoo.org
89.238.71.6    rsync.gentoo.org

After emerging tools, I remove them from hosts file. Then I command 'cat -n /etc/resolv.conf ; dig rsync.gentoo.org ; dig rsync.gentoo.org @8.8.8.8'
Code:
SERVER25 ~ # cat -n /etc/resolv.conf ; dig rsync.gentoo.org ; dig rsync.gentoo.org @8.8.8.8
     1  nameserver 1.1.1.1
     2  nameserver 1.0.0.1

;; global options: +cmd
;; Got answer:

Maybe a bad order in gai.conf ?
What's results when changing the value from 10 to 100 for this line :
Code:
precedence ::ffff:0:0/96 10

What is the output of ip -6 addr ?

Or broken GNU C library environment maybe.
Try and post output of
Code:
# getent ahosts rsync.gentoo.org
# sudo -u portage -- getent ahosts rsync.gentoo.org

Since all lines were started with #, I add the line at gai.conf.
Here is the output:
Code:
SERVER25 ~ # ip -6 addr
1: lo: <LOOPBACK,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 65536 state UNKNOWN qlen 1000
    inet6 ::1/128 scope host noprefixroute
       valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
2: enp3s0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 state UP qlen 1000
    inet6 fe80::2e0:91ff:fe29:ef30/64 scope link proto kernel_ll
       valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
SERVER25 ~ # getent ahosts rsync.gentoo.org
89.238.71.6     STREAM rsync.gentoo.org
89.238.71.6     DGRAM
89.238.71.6     RAW
2a00:1828:a00d:ffff::6 STREAM
2a00:1828:a00d:ffff::6 DGRAM
2a00:1828:a00d:ffff::6 RAW
SERVER25 ~ # sudo -u portage -- getent ahosts rsync.gentoo.org
89.238.71.6     STREAM rsync.gentoo.org
89.238.71.6     DGRAM
89.238.71.6     RAW
2a00:1828:a00d:ffff::6 STREAM
2a00:1828:a00d:ffff::6 DGRAM
2a00:1828:a00d:ffff::6 RAW

Edit: wait, why there is IPv6 address at enp3s0? My router does not support IPv6 and I didn't set Ipv6 address manually.

And did that have an effect ?

This is a link-local address, non-routable.

Good.

Even with default values, it's necessary to uncomment the entire table and then modify the line for ::ffff:0:0/96.

Cf manpages :
Quote:
the presence of a single precedence line in the configuration file causes the default table to not be used.
