I'm a long-time user but an infrequent poster. I thought some of you may relate to this.
My son recently turned 12, and for his birthday, he wanted his own computer to help him learn about computers. He is now the proud owner of a 10-year i7 tower with 16gb of ram. I offered to let him run Windows or Linux. He wanted to run Linux, and I outlined some pros and cons of various distributions. He wanted to learn how the system works, so he chose Gentoo. We have embarked on a fascinating learning journey, spending hours of quality time reading and discussing the handbook. He was amazed at how quickly the machine booted after the installation and that there were so many choices. My favorite part so far was the expression on his face when he ran startxfce4 after two weeks of being on the CLI and a few days with twm. It was priceless.
Thank you. This is an amazing community, and we just added another Gentoo user. |
