When I use the overview to type and start something, Gnome starts Firefox with every other application start. Any idea why that happens?

Those are the updates after which it stared:

And those were the previous ones, I'm including them just in case I missed that behavior because I might very well not have started anything since them and only when freeplane was updated I closed it and started it again which is the first app I noticed that behavior for and when I start everything I need I might go for days and even weeks without starting anything else:

Anybody else experiencing that behavior? Any idea what may cause it?

it's most likely related to this. Although I don't quite understand how. Do you have some custom plugin that may do weird things? Because other distros ship these search-provider-files for a long time, there should be no problems with them+gnome in general. Also, this is the first time I hear someone having problems with it.

EDIT: could you try logging in with a completely new user with no prior settings, no extensions, and see if it works there?

It exhibits the same behavior even with extensions completely disabled as early as the initial overview screen Gnome starts in. One thing I noticed is it hangs for a while on log out. Here are the logs for that particular user: https://bpa.st/V4KQ. There are several logins captured there. The first is with a few extensions, I think in the second I disabled extensions completely.

Here are some more logs, I grepped for search provider: https://bpa.st/TNCA
The two time frames roughly correspond to nearly when it started yesterday and now that I'm testing with the new user.

EDIT: this behavior seems to have ceased when I moved /usr/share/gnome-shell/search-providers/org.mozilla.firefox.search-provider.ini and /usr/share/dbus-1/services/org.mozilla.firefox.SearchProvider.service away from their locations, so it's most probably that.

EDIT2: Haven't see this behavior since. It's been a few hours.

Best Regards,
Georgi

Does it still happen on a new user? I'm not convinced this is a wider issue yet.

But you can use INSTALL_MASK to prevent these files from being installed during updates.

No. The issue is solved.

After today's firefox update it seems like INSTALL_MASK have solved my problem.

Although I don't think the problem is in Firefox. I believe there might be some incompatibility with the current version of Gnome in tree.

What are those search providers about? Do they provide anything useful?

Unless they prove useful, I'm keeping them install-masked.

No. Personally, I use search in gnome shell only to start apps.

Same here, thanks! I just wanted to check with someone else if I'm missing something.

Best Regards,
Georgi

p.s. I tried the changes suggested by you in the bug but I didn't find that browser.gnome-search... key in FF config.

You need to create it with the boolean type

Those changes didn't work for me with firefox-130.0. Neither manually, nor after updating, not even after manually editing the wrapper script according to bug comment #3.

At least after removing the install mask and updating, search does not start a new firefox window. For the next update I'm just going to disable the gnome-shell use flag and live my life as before.

Georgi

Hi !

I got the same problem for about 2 weeks now.
Just did the trick and moved org.mozilla.firefox.search-provider.ini and org.mozilla.firefox.SearchProvider.service to some other folder.

It seems to work so far.

I don't think that firefox has gnome-shell use enabled.

gnome 45.5
firefox 130.0 but I had the problem with previous version also (129 ?)

The use flag was introduced only a few days ago. I rebuilt specifically to get it, the commit in the referenced bug seems to solve the problem with starting firefox but does not enable it as a search provider.

It was introduced in 129.0.1, see the commit in the second post. I must have skipped that update because sometimes I don't update for more than two weeks.

Do you still have that INSTALL_MASK in place? :)

Code:
# grep INSTALL /etc/portage/make.conf
#INSTALL_MASK="/usr/share/gnome-shell/search-providers/org.mozilla.firefox.search-provider.ini /usr/share/dbus-1/services/org.mozilla.firefox.SearchProvider.service"

Code:

# cat /usr/share/dbus-1/services/org.mozilla.firefox.SearchProvider.service
[D-BUS Service]
Name=org.mozilla.firefox.SearchProvider
Exec=/usr/lib64/firefox/firefox --dbus-service /usr/bin/firefox
# cat /usr/share/gnome-shell/search-providers/org.mozilla.firefox.search-provider.ini
[Shell Search Provider]
DesktopId=firefox.desktop
BusName=org.mozilla.firefox.SearchProvider
ObjectPath=/org/mozilla/firefox/SearchProvider
Version=2

First I tried to restore those files because I didn't delete, but preserved them the first time around, I tried to change the wrapper script as suggested in comment #3, I created the configuration entry and it didn't work. Then I explicitly reemerged firefox to see if the install mask had some other impact, but no, it didn't. I again changed the wrapper script but that didn't make it work either. Now that I don't have that issue of starting firefox every time, I'll keep it that way and will disable gnome-shell use flag on the next update. I didn't intend to keep that feature anyway, I was just curious to see it working.

Maybe I need to mark that thread solved as the initial issue doesn't happen anymore?

p.s. I had commented the install mask earlier as I intended on using the use flag from now on, so I'm pretty sure it wasn't in place when I reemerged firefox.

EDIT: all of a sudden I started seeing suggestions from firefox. I don't know what made it work. There must have been some delay or timeout. I suspended the laptop a few times but I'm pretty sure it didn't work after the first one as I did that many times.

EDIT2: I find that search useless. It's way slower than typing into the address bar or clicking on something pinned in the new tab window.

EDIT3: I'm not marking that solved as there obviously are some glitches. Namely not knowing why it didn't start working from the beginning, counting the fact that I restarted the whole system after reemergin firefox.

EDIT4: for what's worth, I moved those files out of their location again and it stopped working. The interesting thing is I've only suspended the system, didn't restart Firefox or Gnome. Something is not quite right.

Best Regards,
Georgi
