Can I emerge without root? Like with npm or pip

Hi, when some software is from third-party overlay just fetch a few files - can I omit the root privilege? To install only for the current user.

I read about --root flag and --prefix https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Project:Prefix

Looks like --root is simpler. Is it a suitable approach for security?

Never used it, but the What is this Prefix? sounds like what you want.
