PostPosted: Wed Sep 04, 2024 5:11 pm    Post subject: [SOLVED] Various KDE 6 application segfaults Reply with quote

Greetings everyone

I originally joined the discussion in this thread: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-8832143.html with a similar problem to tranquilcool.

I'm also seeing segfaults from kwin and several other KDE applications, also from QQuickPixmapRea. As with tranquilcool's case, Plasma 5 works flawlessly, but 6 displays the segfault behaviour. The end result is a black screen, even though some elements of my saved plasma session are verifiably starting (GalaxyBudsClient, for example), there's no UI at all. No login screen, no splash screen and no shell.

So far I've established that it doesn't have any effect whether I'm using amdgpu or vesa driver, X or Wayland, integrated or discrete graphics - the segfaults occur in all scenarios, and I've tested all combinations of those variables.

emerge --info:

~ $ emerge --info

I am struggling to generate backtraces because plasma and sddm both stubbornly refuse to crash while running under gdb. They also don't seem to be trying to render anything in the display while running under gdb. Any guidance on what I might specifically need to have gdb run, based on the above logs, would be useful and appreciated. I'm also happy to rebuild some stuff with debug symbols, but if possible I'd like to avoid rebuilding everything.

Any thoughts, help, guidance etc would be most appreciated. I'll keep trying to get some useful output from gdb and update here if/when I manage that.

Mod note: Fixed some long lines. -- Banana

Have you been able to fix the problem?
So far I haven't succeded, unfortunately!
I have googled everywhere to no avail.

sys-process/minicoredumper may help in getting a coredump to analyse. Once we have another backtrace, we really need to make a report to the KDE people upstream and go from there though, at least if it looks the same (the existing stuff I looked at doesn't have an obvious cause to me).

I will reinstall plasm6 and try to generate the core dump.
Thank you.

And equally few clues about what the actual problem is. I was hoping we'd get some magical revelatory piece of data. :/

Let’s hope some expert can look it up, otherwise you could file a bug. I
Don’t have plasma6 installed at the moment.

I most likely will go ahead and do that in the next 24 hours. sam_ has already said we need to, if my backtrace looks the same. I'm hoping for devs/admins to swing through the thread again soon and let us know what they think.
Also, I think it'd be valuable for the KDE bug report to include both of our data. I'll post here and to your thread when I file it so you and the other guy in your thread can contribute - or I can just grab up all the stuff you've posted and add it myself.

I'll also monitor the upstream bug and chip in if I can spot anything. I feel bad I haven't been able to spot a cause here yet :(

I'd make sure to build ksvg and all other KDE and Qt libraries in the backtrace with debug symbols (note that USE=debug is something else, it's for controlling asserts and so on), get the most verbose one you can, then report it upstream on bugs.kde.org with the full info about when it occurs & some HW info.

We can then link to these forum thread(s) too and say we've had a few people hit it. asturm and I will watch and chime in if we have any ideas too.

==13531== Your program just tried to execute an instruction that Valgrind
==13531== did not recognise. There are two possible reasons for this.
==13531== 1. Your program has a bug and erroneously jumped to a non-code
==13531== location. If you are running Memcheck and you just saw a
==13531== warning about a bad jump, it's probably your program's fault.
==13531== 2. The instruction is legitimate but Valgrind doesn't handle it,
==13531== i.e. it's Valgrind's fault. If you think this is the case or
==13531== you are not sure, please let us know and we'll try to fix it.
==13531== Either way, Valgrind will now raise a SIGILL signal which will
==13531== probably kill your program.

I tried Lxqt just for curiosity, and it segfaults too.
Lxqt depends on qt, so I am thinking. Could it be a qt and not plasma problem?

P.S
Sorry it's nonsense. Lxqt fails because it tries to use kwin_x11 as window manager.

I need a usable laptop. It's been two weeks since I had a working DE. @asturm, if you're still watching this thread, any tips on undoing all the masking of Plasma 5 that you've done in preparation for removing it? I'm in dependency hell trying to roll back to 5.

@localtoast
Somehow I knew that plasma 6 will be a bother. So here is what I did to stay with plasma 5.
I hope this may help you in some way to go back to plasma-5.

First I made an unmask list for the installed plasma-5 packages:
Code:
qlist -IS kde-plasma/* | grep :5 > /etc/portage/package.unmask/kde-plasma-5.unmask

Here is the list of the packages I needed to unmask (kde-plasma-5.unmask):
Code:
kde-plasma/breeze:5
kde-plasma/breeze-gtk:5
kde-plasma/kactivitymanagerd:5
kde-plasma/kde-gtk-config:5
kde-plasma/kdecoration:5
kde-plasma/kdeplasma-addons:5
kde-plasma/kgamma:5
kde-plasma/khotkeys:5
kde-plasma/kinfocenter:5
kde-plasma/kmenuedit:5
kde-plasma/kpipewire:5
kde-plasma/kscreen:5
kde-plasma/kscreenlocker:5
kde-plasma/ksshaskpass:5
kde-plasma/ksystemstats:5
kde-plasma/kwayland:5
kde-plasma/kwayland-integration:5
kde-plasma/kwin:5
kde-plasma/kwrited:5
kde-plasma/layer-shell-qt:5
kde-plasma/libkscreen:5
kde-plasma/libksysguard:5
kde-plasma/libkworkspace:5
kde-plasma/libplasma:5
kde-plasma/milou:5
kde-plasma/oxygen:5
kde-plasma/oxygen-sounds:5
kde-plasma/plasma-activities:5
kde-plasma/plasma-activities-stats:5
kde-plasma/plasma-browser-integration:5
kde-plasma/plasma-desktop:5
kde-plasma/plasma-disks:5
kde-plasma/plasma-integration:5
kde-plasma/plasma-pa:5
kde-plasma/plasma-systemmonitor:5
kde-plasma/plasma-welcome:5
kde-plasma/plasma-workspace:5
kde-plasma/plasma-workspace-wallpapers:5
kde-plasma/powerdevil:5
kde-plasma/print-manager:5
kde-plasma/systemsettings:5
kde-plasma/xdg-desktop-portal-kde:5
kde-plasma/xembed-sni-proxy:5

It can be used as an emerge list, like so:
Code:
 emerge -1va $(cat kde-plasma-5.unmask)

Then I run this script to copy all these plasma-5 packages from portage to my local overlay and generate manifests:
Code:
#!/bin/bash

PORT_DIR=/usr/portage/kde-plasma
OVERLAY_DIR=/usr/portage/local/kde-plasma

for p in $(qlist -IvS kde-plasma/* | grep :5 | sed 's#kde-plasma/##;s#:5##')
do
  PKG_DIR=${p%-5.*}
   mkdir -p $OVERLAY_DIR/$PKG_DIR
  cp $PORT_DIR/$PKG_DIR/$p.ebuild $OVERLAY_DIR/$PKG_DIR/
  ebuild $OVERLAY_DIR/$PKG_DIR/$p.ebuild manifest
  # sed -i 's/gentoo/my-overlays/' /var/db/pkg/kde-plasma/$p/repository
done
NOTES:
  • You may need to adjust PORT_DIR and OVERLAY_DIR to fit your installation.
  • The commented-out line changes the repository entry in the pkg database to prevent unnecessary rebuilds.

Sweet, thanks, that looks like it could solve a problem or two. Are you having any issues with purpose or kaccounts-integration, kaccounts-providers, or anything related? Or spectacle or gwenview? Those seem as if they're going to be problematic on my install.

I have none of the kaccount-* installed.

Spectacle: I have masked: >=kde-apps/spectacle-24.05.2. Version 23.08.5 works fine.
But I prefer the old ksnap which is a lot better. Still works

Same for gwenview: masked >=kde-apps/gwenview-24.08.1 and use version 28.08.0-r1

Also watch out media-libs/kimageannotator and media-libs/kcolorpicker I had to mask the latest versions.

@localtoast: Before you do that, I would still rather recommend

1) to upgrade to KF-6.6.0 and Plasma 6.1.5, just because they are available in ~arch now
2) switch your away from CFLAGS="-march=native -mtune=native" to the generic settings used by gentoobinhost which you appear to be using, and rebuild the Qt packages.

I have:
CFLAGS="-O2 -march=native -pipe"
and not using binpackages
what should I switch to?
Thank you.

You have
Code:
Binary Repositories:

gentoobinhost
    priority: 1
    sync-uri: https://distfiles.gentoo.org/releases/amd64/binpackages/23.0/x86-64

though.

If you do not use the Gentoo hosted binary packages, checkout this document to choose the right setting for your AMD FX-9800: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Safe_CFLAGS#FX-XXXX

Sorry I didn't say this. I am some other guy having the same problem.
I don't use binpackges.
