Sure, but sometimes that's the protocol that needs to be used due to firewall configurations (a number of which allow HTTP traffic in a way they don't allow traffic involving other protocols).

Well, in that case, i suggest you open a bug on bugs.gentoo.org with that patch, to bring it to the maintainers' attention and allow them to consider it.
