I am stuck with a blocked world update for days now. At first I just ingored, assuming it would be eventually corrected in the next world update, but it has been persistent. It probably now more than a week since world updates are blocked here. The issue seems to involve dev-qt/qtbase, but I cant quite figure it out:

Code:

~> sudo emerge --ask --update --deep --with-bdeps=y --changed-deps --newuse --changed-use @world
Senha:

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

It may be possible to solve this problem by using package.mask to
prevent one of those packages from being selected. However, it is also
possible that conflicting dependencies exist such that they are
impossible to satisfy simultaneously.  If such a conflict exists in
the dependencies of two different packages, then those packages can
not be installed simultaneously. You may want to try a larger value of
the --backtrack option, such as --backtrack=30, in order to see if
that will solve this conflict automatically.

For more information, see MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge man
page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

Thank you all for your help.

You're not using a desktop profile? This would be much easier otherwise.

Scan the output for "required by" string. These lines tell you that several packages are requesting USE flags set on dev-qt/qtbase:6, which indeed your configuration of dev-qt/qtbase:6 looks to be providing - but other dev-qt/* packages like qtdeclarative need these flags *in sync* with qtbase:6, like qtdeclarative. And really, you want to have USE like icu, and opengl, and wayland, and vulkan, ... globally enabled, but it seems like you did that only selectively via package.use for qtbase:6 yet?

Thank you asturm for your reply.

Yes, I am not using a desktop profile. I have never used one with gentoo. What I have is dwm, always trying to use the lightest possible install. I dont know what changed, why those packages are been requested now, since I continue with a light install and havent installed any out-of-the-ordinary tool that would require a big change in my system. This is exactly what I have:

Code:

Updates bring changes, sometimes bigger changes (like Qt5 -> Qt6, KF5 -> KF6):

Code:
[ebuild  NS    ] kde-apps/okular-24.05.2 [23.08.5]
[uninstall     ] kde-apps/okular-23.08.5
[blocks b      ] kde-apps/okular:5 ("kde-apps/okular:5" is soft blocking kde-apps/okular-24.05.2)
[ebuild  NS    ] kde-plasma/polkit-kde-agent-6.1.4 [5.27.11]
[uninstall     ] kde-plasma/polkit-kde-agent-5.27.11
[blocks b      ] kde-plasma/polkit-kde-agent:5 ("kde-plasma/polkit-kde-agent:5" is soft blocking kde-plasma/polkit-kde-agent-6.1.4)

Not impossible to use package.use for everything but you'll have a lot of figuring out to do, esp. given portage is not very helpful at showing the proper solution to this type of conflict. Either way, it won't go away magically by waiting w/o a desktop profile.

If really want to keep your current profile and want minimal, I'd at *least* USE="opengl icu kf6compat" globally and cleanup your package.use to avoid mismatches. May need more depending on what you're installing but these are hard to pass w/ qt6+kde.

Albeit I think trying to be minimal when you're installing qt6 and kde packages doesn't make much sense, few extra default USE weights little in the balance. Edit: So may just want to set most desktop USE flags to get the expected experience, or ideally merge the desktop profile with your current, albeit that's slightly more advanced usage.

I do have 23.0/split-usr/hardened. What I'm doing from time to time is to eselect the plasma profile and run "emerge -p @world" to check if there are USE flags I should add here. Then I switch back to my profile and act accordingly to the output.

Thank you lonen for your reply.

Yes, I totally agree my situation is not ideal. When first installing my system, I had huge issues as you may see here that led me to forcefully deviate somehow from a truly minimal install. I have a much larger system in this laptop than in my other two machines because of that. I believe the only KDE tool that I use is okular, but it is possible that others are installed because of my "original sin".

So, regarding your sugestion: I should first add this USE="opengl icu kf6compat" and rerun world updates?

Regarding package.use, I dont think I have that many:

Code:

~> ls /etc/portage/package.use/
apvlv  btrfs-progs  elogind  feh          fwupd         gutenprint   libcaca      libreoffice-bin  lxcfs  mupdf   ntp     openntpd    simplescreenrecorder  tmux         vim         xournal       zz-autounmask

bash   deluge       f3       firefox-bin  googlechrome  imagemagick  libreoffice  lxc              mpv    ntfs3g  okular  qemu        texlive               vifm         vlc         zathura-meta

ftr, it doesn't look as if kf6compat will be doing anything for your system. In that area, Portage is able to autoresolve the blockers, automatically cleaning up the older KF5 version. And probably all of KF5 will be cleaned up by a follow-up depclean run after the upgrade.

Yes albeit can probably skip kf6compat given asturm's reply who knows better for that one.

It may or may not be enough but it should improve the situation still.

It depends on what's set in there, I'd be wary of anything either setting or unsetting opengl, vulkan, wayland, icu, accessibility, X, and maybe others I'm forgetting that are more meant to be either set globally or not at all. If a package does require one of these, then throw it in global instead.

Edit: may possibly need USE=wayland even if you don't use it, it only adds some tiny libraries.

As you can see, except for vulkan and acessibility all others are present somewhere in package.use. So, what should I do: enabling a given one for global use and at the same time removing from the package.use?

Thank you again!

It worked!

I have added for global use the flags opengl, icu and wayland, and in the sequence the system asked for two minor package.use changes. After that there was a huge world update, approximately 140 updates, which took nearly a whole night, but concluded without errors. The subsequent cleanup removed 43 packages, and now I have the system "unlocked" again. For future reference, this is my new make.conf file:

Code:

~> cat /etc/portage/make.conf
