Greetings to all, I am attempting to install gentoo using the "LiveGUI USB Image" the 3GiB one as I am following a guide by Kernotex. The issue is that in the guide, when he boots up the system, it goes straight to a KDE desktop. Although I personally follow the install guide on the gentoo website and keep any tutorials as a sanity check, I may be doing something wrong but, I can seem to figure out how to get the KDE liveGUI working. When i boot up the install it goes to gentoo@livecd

Can someone help me with this issue?
Many thanks in advance!

Which version of the image exactly are you using?

There is a known issue where the GUI is not quite there in the latest builds.

See https://bugs.gentoo.org/938718 for more details, and some known good versions.

Thank you for getting back to me witha bug report. A user on the thread says that this version in the title still works but it is an older version. So I am here to ask where can I download the older install media?

Screengrab of boot issue

The latest LiveGUI image with timestamp 20240825T170406Z doesn't boot into KDE - it just drops into the command line. Trying to start X manually shows some errors about unable to connect to X server.

I see errors from xinitrc like "xterm: command not found", "xclock: command not found", etc.

An earlier build 20240714T170402Z is fine.

Thanks all!

They can generally be found from here, though '20240714T170402Z' is old enough to have been removed already, it seems (some mirrors might have it still though):

https://distfiles.gentoo.org/releases/amd64/autobuilds/

Another user in the bug report mentions '20240818T143401Z' as being good as well, however, which can be found there.

Reported working a few threads below.

I have tried this: https://distfiles.gentoo.org/releases/amd64/autobuilds/20240912T232043Z/ as Iogrusx said but it seems that this one is also not functioning and I dont get the KDE GUI
I have tried this one from https://distfiles.gentoo.org/releases/amd64/autobuilds/ thanks to chiltoo but it seems it also doesnt work. I just get gentoo@livecd terminal instead of the GUI.
Is there a reason for this issue with gentoo? Am I going to have to deal with linux mint again lol. I might install gentoo thru arch ig. thanks all!

I would like to thank everyone for helping me!

Well, the issue is being looked into, but I'm not sure if the exact reason is known yet.

In any case, it is not like you /need/ the GUI in any case.

You can use the command-line only (can even copy-paste from the manual if you browse it via the Links web browser for example).

Moreover, you can indeed use /any/ other Linux GUI for the purpose just fine, be it Arch, Mint, etc. and so on. :]

I myself prefer the Gentoo "Admin CD" (same as the "Minimal Installation CD" but it has some more tools included).

Nothing from the Gentoo installation media is supposed to go into your Gentoo Linux creation.

I'm sorry, I've made a mistake, the reported working one was in here: https://distfiles.gentoo.org/releases/amd64/autobuilds/20240818T143401Z/

But as Chiitoo says, you can use the command line. Nothing in the handbook requires graphic mode.
