You did something wrong. Specifically, you did not follow Guidelines item #4. Portage should have printed more output beyond what you showed, and I suspect that output would help us address your problem. Also, you should show us at least the timestamp of the tree, if not the output of emerge --info.
I don't see any obvious signs of a mask in my copy of the tree. What is the output of grep -rw grub /etc/portage/package.*? |
