Hi all,

After having issues with ppp here, now I have the exact same problem with syslog-ng. I installed version 4.8 but the system is looking for the library libsyslog-ng-4.7.so.0.

Code:
# /etc/init.d/syslog-ng start
 * Caching service dependencies ...
Error: upsdrv is the name of a real and virtual service.                                                                                                               [ ok ]
 * Checking your configfile (/etc/syslog-ng/syslog-ng.conf) ...
syslog-ng: error while loading shared libraries: libsyslog-ng-4.7.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
 * Configuration error. Please fix your configfile (/etc/syslog-ng/syslog-ng.conf)                                                                                     [ !! ]
 * ERROR: syslog-ng failed to start

Unfortunately, there is no reference to the shared library within the syslog-ng.conf file.

Since I experienced the identical problem with ppp, I believe this indicates a more general issue beyond the individual package. What do you think?
Thanks!

Lorenzo

Make sure your config file is indeed correct. Somtimes the first line of the error is the correct one (and sometimes not, so just check everything)

Did you re-emerge syslog-ng and the error message still exists?

I think the warning about the configuration file is bogus, and triggered by syslog-ng being broken. What is the output of emerge --info app-admin/syslog-ng ; scanelf --needed /usr/sbin/syslog-ng ; lddtree /usr/sbin/syslog-ng?

That output looks correct. Is there some other syslog-ng on your system? Did you ever install something system-wide outside of Portage? What is the output of type syslog-ng, as run by root at the same prompt where you would run the init script?

I don't think so...

No

Code:
# type syslog-ng
syslog-ng è /usr/bin/syslog-ng

Please note that the exact same issue occurs with the ppp 2.5.1 package (https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1171203.html). Once installed, the system, via /etc/init.d/net.ppp0, searches for the pppoe.so library within /usr/lib64/pppd/2.5.0, which no longer exists since version 2.5.1 has been installed.
Thank you,

Lorenzo

That output looks correct. Is there some other syslog-ng on your system? Did you ever install something system-wide outside of Portage? What is the output of type syslog-ng, as run by root at the same prompt where you would run the init script?

I wonder if this is something to do with the /usr/lib64/libsyslog-ng.so symlink chain not being updated, per something to do with config-protect or read-only mounts or somesuch - though this is just me guessing.

First, I would pursue Hu's line of questioning. This often happens with something in e.g. /usr/local being picked up which obviously Portage's preserved-libs cannot help with.

Secondly, if the symlink is not being updated, we should investigate if env-update (which calls ldconfig) is failing or misbehaving somehow.

How can I check it?
Thank you,

This hypothesis is promising. I will verify it at home this evening.
Thank you!

Unfortunately, everything seems ok.

Code:

# ls -ls /usr/lib64/libsyslo*
   0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root      25 29 ott 08.57 /usr/lib64/libsyslog-ng-4.8.so.0 -> libsyslog-ng-4.8.so.0.0.0
1256 -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1284208 29 ott 08.57 /usr/lib64/libsyslog-ng-4.8.so.0.0.0
  44 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root   44076 29 ott 08.57 /usr/lib64/libsyslog-ng-native-connector.a
   0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root      25 29 ott 08.57 /usr/lib64/libsyslog-ng.so -> libsyslog-ng-4.8.so.0.0.0
