Gentoo has been a ride to install, I have messed up a lot, just like on my Arch, which I failed like 4 times for different reasons, but, in the end, it was just me messing around with a harder distro, so, I have learned a lot about managing USE flags, specific config files, and more. I hope to actually install it tomorrow (I'm too busy to actually install today), and actually get it right.

How is/was your experience with Gentoo?

You do know this is a Gentoo forum, don't you?
Those who don't like it don't stick around.

At least add some obviously trollish answer to the poll so we can call it a joke
(Or make the question more specific)

About 20 years ago I had my friend help me to install Gentoo. A lot has happened since.
I wouldn't be here if I disliked Gentoo.

i've been using Gentoo for almost three years now. Apart from the amount of control it gives me over how my system is put together, which i really appreciate, i also continue to appreciate various of the design decisions: when learning about them, i typically have an "Oh neat" response, rather than a response of "What is this i don't even".

Something specific that impressed me as soon as i started using Gentoo was how helpful emerge error messages could be: how specific information was provided regarding what might have gone wrong, how one might fix it, and what one should do if seeking help. It's sad that so much software has taught people that all error messages are as inscrutable as a guru meditation, because that leads newcomers to Gentoo to assume - not unreasonably - that the error output won't include anything they themselves can act on.

(Of course, emerge output can also be overwhelming, as in the case of "conflicts with" output. i'm not sure if there's any way to improve that, or indeed if there are existing wiki articles that explain how to 'decode' such output - are there? There are so many posts that ask for helping in this regard that it seems like it would be useful to have a "teach someone to fish" article ....)

Similar, I was looking for x86_64 support, getting bored of "making my own packages" for missing 64bit software every major OS update.
"What, Gentoo doesn't have a `version`, it just stays up to date - sign me up!", never looked back.

Yes.

Unless comparing it to an alternative, then it's the first option.
