Fail to compile pyside6 package message below. Any insights from this? If additional info is needed, I could post the log and other items. Let me know.
I think, from the messages, that the problem is within pyside6 package itself and other info will provide no relevant info.
Code: |

Can you share the build log?
surely there's some clue to consider
the file was mentioned as
Code: | /var/tmp/portage/dev-python/pyside6-6.7.3/temp/build.log |

You have provided NONE of this information.
I don't understand your "the problem is within pyside6 package itself and other info will provide no relevant info". The message is telling you to post info about the pyside6 package, nobody is asking for "other" info about Firefox or KDE or anything of the sort -- we just want the info it told you to provide about pyside6, which you have not done. |

"sudo emerge -av pyside6" fails at compile of module 1101 of 1124. The build log is 18k lines. (250k) Too big to post, I think.

I can't ask anyone to look through 18k lines of text.
I will withdraw this query. Perhaps it will get cleared in normal course of events.

Yes you can, it's what we do all the time.
"cmake failed" is not the real error, some job that cmake was running failed and we need to know which job and why.
Pyside is messy, so you should not expect this to resolve by itself. One common reason pyside fails is because there is a mismatch between the compiler and/or the compiler options between pyside and shiboken. So something to try is rebuilding shiboken. But without the log I cannot say more. _________________ OS: Gentoo 6.10.12-gentoo-dist, ~amd64, 23.0/desktop/plasma/systemd

I routinely look through far, far longer pastebins than a mere tiny 18k lines worth, in order to debug the problems users report.
It is exceedingly easy to grep for specific bug keywords or manually inspect only the last couple hundred lines -- you just need to have a lot of familiarity with debugging user problems, know how to recognize and analyze compiler errors, make/ninja error statuses, etc. It is domain-specific knowledge, that's why users ask experts for help, but the experts absolutely do know how to find the real issue in *seconds*.
The reason we ask for the full 18k lines of text is because long experience has proven that when people try to shorten the text in order to be "helpful" they accidentally remove the 5 lines that were actually needed and which we could have found immediately, if only they were actually there to be found...
... and instead we end up spending multiple *days* arguing back and forth about the correct way to report a bug.
In summary, please stop overthinking this. We ask for certain information for a reason. It's because the best way to ensure a FAST response is to provide ALL the information that you have available, so that we are able to look at the information *we* know matters. |

@eschwartz,
Code: |
I don't understand your "the problem is within pyside6 package itself and other info will provide no relevant info".
|
I said that just because approx 1100 modules out of 1124 modules had already compiled. This says to me that the problem is within pyside6 source package.
Try emerging pyside6 and see if it works. Report what you see and we can move on.

That does not mean that it is a problem that we cannot fix. Nor does it mean that it is not a problem specific to some compiler (option). Note that the numbering of jobs is somewhat arbitrary, that information tells me nothing.
Quote: | Try emerging pyside6 and see if it works. Report what you see and we can move on. |
I am the maintainer of this package, it works fine for me, I cannot reproduce your problem. That is why I need the build log so I can see what is going on on your end.
This is taking frustratingly long, so this will be the final time I ask for the log. _________________ OS: Gentoo 6.10.12-gentoo-dist, ~amd64, 23.0/desktop/plasma/systemd

You can gzip it and upload the resulting gzipped build.log.gz
I think https://gist.github.com / "wgetpaste -s gists" can do larger sizes? Needs setting up an API token I suppose. |

@eschwartz
Various pastebin services on the wgetpaste service list would not accept my gzipped file. I deleted it to start over again but gzip did not make a backup of the original build.log file. I did not notice this.
Therefore, I am running the emerge again to re-create the build.log gzip file for pastebin. Will take a few hours. |

Let me know if any problem

It says that the downloaded file isn't in gzip format, so it appears to have been corrupted. I do not personally use wgetpaste or dpaste.com, but I know that the curl-based instructions at https://paste.gentoo.zip/ *do* work for uploading compressed logfiles |

FWIW the description above was not 18 kilobytes -- it was 18 thousand lines, and 250 kilobytes. Perhaps 250 kilobytes is still fine though the pastebin I usually use requires an account to upload and broadly supports 1024 mebibyte sized files but deletes them after 10 days if they exceed 10 Kib
I could upload the Gentoo admincd to that one if I really wanted, I think. |

Sorry my units are all screwed up. Original build.log was 2.5mbytes.
I ran gzip -c build.log >build.log.gz
and then
wgetpaste -s dpaste build.log.gz
I will repeat it to see if it is again corrupted.

gzip: /tmp/SZr7iVhY: unexpected end of file
I asked some wgetpaste users who confirmed that wgetpaste seems to be broken for binary files as it tries to run ansifilter on them.
Like I said, the https://paste.gentoo.zip/ website interface says you can upload arbitrary files like this:
Code: |
# Upload a file's contents:
$ curl -F "_=@/path/to/file.txt" https://paste.gentoo.zip

You can also upload the log to google drive, dropbox or whatever. Or alternatively open a new bug report on bugs.gentoo.org and upload the (compressed) log there. _________________ OS: Gentoo 6.10.12-gentoo-dist, ~amd64, 23.0/desktop/plasma/systemd

Don't do this without running base64 on the .gz first and sending that instead. Simple binary to text encoding that is easily reversed. |

I apologize for the difficulty I am having with pastebin. I don't use any google anything and also do not use dropbox. I want to get pastebin working; as to app and site to use.
I suggest that the wgetpaste gentoo wiki https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Wgetpaste be modified to correct for inability of wgetpaste to handle binary files. Perhaps others will not have these problems. I followed that for wgetpaste installation including the ssl USE flag. Where might I post that suggestion.
I remember 30 or 40 years ago having to make adjustments to zip files for text/binary differences but I have not encountered that anywhere in so long, I thought that was long over.
I need to review that.
I will look for alternate to wgetpaste and try that out.
I wish to get my procedures for doing pastebin workable. When I do I will publish them to forum.
I will punt on this for a day and do a system update on friday.
Then, When the same pyside6 error occurs again, I will repost build.log to a pastebin.
pyside6 is used by freecad and that is my reason for doing this. I am just trying to get current on new freecad v1 rc2.
thanks, tom kosvic |

Just for reference: People are not asking for the log to actually read all of it. It usually just takes a couple seconds to locate the actual error message (looking for the term "error" is a good start when you're not familiar with the build system), which could already provide the solution or at least pointers where to look next. |
