Seems like gnushogi/xshogi won't compile.

Gnushogi itself is OK, but it fails when it tries to go to xshogi. I tried the upstream package
for 1.4.2, but it also fails. These packages were made 10 years ago - latest version on
the GNU site is from 2014. It's old, but it used to work well.

Based on the output shown, the package did not build xshogi/xshogi, but the ebuild tried to install that anyway. This looks like a bug in the package, since the ebuild would have configured it to build xshogi. Portage should have told you to share the full build.log. Perhaps that log will have a clue as to why this file was not built as expected.

Thanks for the reply.

FWIW, this problem with the compile started only in the last week. I did an emerge -Du world last weekend.
Before that, this package compiled fine. I'm not sure which updated package knocked it out though.

Here's the tail of the /var/tmp/portage/games-board/gnushogi-1.4.1-r1/temp/build.log

This is the real error:

make[1]: *** [Makefile:100: parser.o] Error 1
...
make: [Makefile:56: xshogi_compile] Error 2 (ignored)

And it's bug 932280, yet another "porting to modern C" one.

parser.o is needed for building xshogi, and compiling the former fails (but somehow doesn't abort the whole build), so the latter does not exist, so the ebuild's dobin fails as well.

OP: please use code tags, as I edited your first post to do, rather than bold tags.

I agree with GDH-gentoo, but want to add that I think there is a second, lesser bug here. The upstream build should have aborted when it failed to compile that file, but instead continued on, and the ebuild thought that the call to make was successful.

Thanks GDH-gentoo and Hu.

I guess this needs to be reported upstream.

Hu - will do. I'll use code tags from now on I don't post much - getting used to it still.
