PostPosted: Sun Dec 21, 2003 8:26 pm    Post subject: Fonts Problems on my System Reply with quote

Hi all,

I have some font issues (across all installed desktops) in Mozilla and Gimp and some other bits and pieces. The fonts are TINY on the menus, and if I run the Mozilla profile mgr for example, they are almost illegible.

I've been throug the kde control center and all the obvois things and am now thinking that maybe I need to configre QT or GTK - I have run the qt-config program and chosen large fonts, so that isn't it. But I can't find anything to alter GTK stuff.....

Can anyone help me pinpoint the problem? .- it's really makeing things a bit tough....

PS, I have this in make.conf
USE="-gtk -gnome kde qt alsa -dvd -cdr"
(although I tried adding gtk to my latest Moz build..)

Thanks

Nick

Update: I emerged Gnome overnight, in Gnome, it works great, with reasonable font sizes etc.......

Is it somthing in the way I compiled KDE and other Deskstops? Perhaps to do with my USE settings above?

Hope that gives someone a better idea......

Nick

No solution for you, but I might be having the same problem.

See this screenshot: [link expired]

Is this what you're experiencing?

Hmm .. it's strange. The font size isn't in any of the configurations.

Do you have GNOME installed? Do you have -gnome -gtk set in your USE vars? I really don't know, but maybe the fonts rely on GTK support??

I had the same problem. You must change the default font of GTK. See how to do this on this page : http://www.datiku.com/tutorials/gnulinux/easy_gtk_on_kde.htm

I don't know if it's the same but i have a similar problem.
Some fonts just become so tiny they're unreadable.
I'm using kahakai, but it's also happened in fluxbox. I've narrowed down the problem to xfs and to aliased fonts. un-aliased fonts keep their size, aliased ones just become tiny.
This doesn't happen often, however when it happens, no matter how many times i reboot X or even reboot the box, things keep the same until some random time i shutdown X and it gives me a warning like this...
Code:
FreeFontPath: FPE "unix/:-1" refcount is 2 should be 1, fixing

After this warning things get back to normal. I've googled my ass off and every thing i've found about this were questions that nobody was able to answer.

what did you put for your include "<theme>"? i can't really find an equivalent here.

having no luck with this, although I do believe this has something to do with gtk settings.

Just tried running MLDonkey with a GTK gui. The fonts are tiny again and this is what I got on stderr:

Gdk-WARNING **: Missing charsets in FontSet creation

I get the same thing when running xmms from command line.

Could this be the problem?

I had some problems like this recently and googled up a solution.

Make sure you have

DisplaySize 279 203

in the Monitor section of your XF86config file. My monitor is 279mm wide and 203mm in height. This seems to have fixed many of the font problems I was having and seems to make kde, gtk, and fluxbox all look the same as far as fonts are concerned.

egthompson, I tried that and it made the fonts that were working huge, but the ones that were tiny stayed tiny.

I have a 17'' ViewSonic 17PS

Are you running gnome-settings-daemon?

Worked great for me, thanks. I just put a valid font in the config file and all is well again ;)

Which config file?

It's not anything that I see in my processes and I don't think that's anything that I can run. I don't have GNOME installed; just KDE.

If you don't have gnome installed then you don't have gnome-settings-daemon.
You can emerge gtk-theme-switcher (I think it's called like that) and then run the switch2 program. It will create a $HOME/.gtkrc-2.0 for you. Then edit this file and add 'gtk-font-name = "Bitstream Vera Sans 12"' at the beginning. I have 'gtk-font-name = "Verdana 11"', so you see you can choose a different font if you didn't installed bitstream vera.

I've done this and nothing's changed. Some applications (like jpilot use the new theme and font), but XMMS, MLDonkey, GIMP still show tiny fonts. I'm going to try installing GNOME. Maybe it'll solve this.

Tried installing GNOME. Nothing's changed. I've tried editing multiple files and restarted the applications with small fonts, but to no avail.

the file is in my home dir. .gtkrc-2.0 :

Code:
# -- THEME AUTO-WRITTEN DO NOT EDIT
include "/usr/share/themes/AquaLightBlue/gtk-2.0/gtkrc"
gtk-font-name = "Verdana 9"
include "/home/tro/.gtkrc.mine"

# -- THEME AUTO-WRITTEN DO NOT EDIT

Note: GAIM correctly sees the Verdana font and applies it. The same works for Mozilla Thunderbird. XMMS, GIMP, MLDonkey GUI continue to show tiny fonts.

Thanks for the link. But GAIM reads the file correctly. I'm having problems with the above mentioned apps.

I think I know where the problem lies. I don't know how to fix it, though.

.gtkrc-2.0 is responsible for gtk 2 applications only. I found that out by first running gkrellm2, which got my fonts identified properly, and then running gkrellm, which had tiny fonts. This leads me to believe that I must have another file for gtk 1 application which would specify the font.

Does anyone know of such file? I suspect .gtkrc ??

could you post the contents of all those files, except for .gtkrc-2.0?

Thanks.

well, .gtkrc only has xfce stuff in it and the others dont look to helpful either, but there they are:

.gtkrc-1.2-gnome2
# Autowritten by gnome-settings-daemon. Do not edit

include "/usr/share/themes/Raleigh/gtk/gtkrc"

include "/home/nick/.gtkrc.mine"

.gtkrc-kde
# Appearance & Themes -> Colors in the Control Center and disable the checkbox
# "Apply colors to non-KDE applications"
#
#
style "default"
{
bg[NORMAL] = { 0.863, 0.863, 0.863 }
bg[SELECTED] = { 0.039, 0.373, 0.537 }
