I can not see any touchpad device under lsusb or lshw or lspci so i have to assume my touchpad is on i2c or something. it does work but if i am trying to just move the pointer . <--- that far.. so I can drag a window border for example the pointer simply does not move. It only moves if my finger moves above a certain speed threshold which makes it almost impossible to control the pointer.

It helps when asking for help for problems like this, is the vendor and model of laptop were given.

And have you looked at the bios to see if there are any settings for the touchpad?

The laptop is not a brand name, its an M-Tech M8700. There is nothing in the bios that is relevant and the problem does not occur from windows I can control the mouse down to the minutest of movements with the lightest of touches..

We had many problems in the past where an i2c connected touchpad didnt work because of missing kernel options. But the fact that a touchpad works - just not normally - is a new problem. I would immediately ask the following questions:

1 Does it work if you boot our GentooLIVE CD?
2 If no: Does it work when you boot (the latest) UbuntuLIVE CD?

1+2 no -> This touchpad has problem under linux
1+2 yes -> 3. Did you manually configure your kernel yourself?

3 yes -> We need the output of “dmesg" after you booted our GentooLiveCD + the "dmesg" after you booted your Gentoo system + your current kernel .config

(please use https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Wgetpaste for these big files)

Attempted to post the requested info but i got a very helpful "Error in posting" message. Kind of like when windows boots and tells you "The application could not be started" without telling you which application could not be started :/

lol

Error in posting often means you exceeded a limit, either post body size or title size. Since pietinger specifically expected these to be large and told you to use wgetpaste, my guess is it exceeds the post body size limit. Please use wgetpaste as directed instead of trying to paste the information inline in the post.

Works fine on the live cd and I am using a custom built kernel

dmesg for custom https://bpa.st/XCXA
dmesg for live cd https://bpa.st/RRKA
custom kernel config https://paste.gentoo.zip/6iiAogVV

mark4,

here you see the difference between your kernel and our Gentoo distribution kernel:
Code:
[    6.625365] hid-multitouch 0003:046D:C548.0004: input,hidraw3: USB HID v1.11 Device [Logitech USB Receiver] on usb-0000:00:14.0-2/input3
[    6.870081] input: FTCS1000:01 2808:0102 Mouse as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:15.0/i2c_designware.0/i2c-0/i2c-FTCS1000:01/0018:2808:0102.0005/input/input14
[    6.873060] input: FTCS1000:01 2808:0102 Touchpad as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:15.0/i2c_designware.0/i2c-0/i2c-FTCS1000:01/0018:2808:0102.0005/input/input15
[    6.875465] hid-multitouch 0018:2808:0102.0005: input,hidraw4: I2C HID v1.00 Mouse [FTCS1000:01 2808:0102] on i2c-FTCS1000:01

[  113.750949] hid-multitouch 0003:046D:C548.0004: input,hidraw3: USB HID v1.11 Device [Logitech USB Receiver] on usb-0000:00:14.0-2/input3

and the reason is you miss two (or three) important settings:

1. You have a:
Code:
[    0.164552] smpboot: CPU0: Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-14900HX (family: 0x6, model: 0xb7, stepping: 0x1)

Almost every PINCTRL module is enabled in your .config ... but not the one you need:
Code:
# CONFIG_PINCTRL_ALDERLAKE is not set

2. You need this in every case for an i2c connected touchpad:
Code:
# CONFIG_I2C_HID_ACPI is not set

(see also: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/User:Pietinger/Experimental/Manual_Configuring_Current_Kernel#I2C_Touchpad )

3. Because you have a Synoptics designware PCI controller maybe you need also:
Code:
# CONFIG_PCIE_DW_PLAT_HOST is not set

BTW: You have many many unnecessary modules enabled ... for example you need only this one: CONFIG_I2C_I801=m
