Hello all,
I recently updated with "emerge --ask --update --deep @world. I never included --deep before, and my computer spent the next 18 hours or so rebuilding 234 packages. Sadly it was unable to rebuild the game 0ad.Here is the output of the emerge --info command. I will happily supply the build log but it is 64,000 lines long. Anyone know how I should approach this problem?

Code:
# emerge --info '=games-strategy/0ad-0.0.26_alpha-r2::gentoo'

Since you did not supply an error message or the build log, there is little we can do for you. Please follow the instructions that Portage prints when you get a failure.

In this case, I speculatively searched bugs.gentoo.org for 0ad and got a hit that is recent and plausible: games-strategy/0ad fails to compile with recent dev-libs/libfmt. Does this bug report match the failure you saw?

Apologies, I am not sure how to post the build log...as I said it is over 64,000 lines. Should I simply paste it? It is true that on the initial attempt, dev-libs/libfmt appeared in the error messages as not installed, along with dev-qt/qtgui and dev-libs/icu. So, perhaps naively, I emerged each of these, and then retried to emerge 0ad. The final output after this second attempt was:

Code:

You can provide a link to the log using wgetpaste (package app-text/wgetpaste).

The patch from the bug report that Hu posted will fix the error. It's the one I used to fix the compile error.

From: Ralph Sennhauser <ralph.sennhauser@gmail.com>
Date: Tue, 19 Nov 2024 18:31:13 +0100
Subject: Fix segfault with openal-1.24.0

With version 1.24.0 alcIsExtensionPresent() has dropped case insensitive
string comparison [1], use upper case names.

The internal strings are uppercase since the first git commit importing
openal 17 years ago.

Ok, so how can I apply the patches? I did try to manually edit the files in /var/tmp/portage/games-strategy/0ad-0.0.26_alpha-r2/work/0ad-0.0.26-alpha/source/, but how can I then build it? If I use emerge, it simply replaces my edited files.

/etc/portage/patches/games-strategy/0ad/ and re-emerge 0ad.

you'll see output or in the log, e.g.
Code:
 * Applying user patches from /etc/portage/patches ...
 * Applying 0012-Fix-segfault-with-openal-1.24.0.patch ...
 [ ok ]
 * Applying Fix-the-removal-of-implicit-conversions-in-libfmt-10.patch ...
 [ ok ]
 * User patches applied.

/etc/portage/patches/games-strategy/0ad/Fix-the-removal-of-implicit-conversions-in-libfmt-10.patch
Try the patch from https://bugs.gentoo.org/attachment.cgi?id=915955&action=edit

Its the same patch but there maybe something that is not visible that is different.

One of the log files should have why the patch failed.

Edit:
I was able to build 0ad with the patch and libfmt-11.

Thanks for the help everyone. I have sucessfully built 0ad with the Fix-the-removal-of-implicit-conversions-in-libfmt-10.patch. However the game fails to start. So I then tried also adding the 0012-Fix-segfault-with-openal-1.24.0.patch:

Code:
From: Ralph Sennhauser <ralph.sennhauser@gmail.com>
Date: Tue, 19 Nov 2024 18:31:13 +0100
Subject: Fix segfault with openal-1.24.0

With version 1.24.0 alcIsExtensionPresent() has dropped case insensitive
string comparison [1], use upper case names.

The internal strings are uppercase since the first git commit importing
openal 17 years ago.

Does the last line of the patch end with a carriage return?

Yes it does end with a carriage return. I have recompiled without the sound manager patch, and the output says it has compiled and is installed. However, when I try to open it, absolutely nothing happens...nothing seems to be logged anywhere that might suggest a problem.

So it would seem that the sound manager patch is required. I am trying to understand why it does not like my patch. I have also tried adding a brace on the next line, but am uncertain whether to do this I need also to amend some other aspect of the patchfile. If there is a way that I could edit the required files by hand and then build the package maybe that could work.

As I read the log message in the sound manager patch, it fixes an outright crash. If you are not seeing a crash, you probably do not need that patch (though having it should be safe if you can get it to work).

Please post the output of base64 -w0 < /etc/portage/patches/games-strategy/0ad/sound-manager.patch so that we can see exactly what is in your patch file. I suspect some whitespace error is causing a problem. From where did you get this patch, and how exactly did you put it into place?

You have an errant tab on the second to last line of your patch file, and an errant blank line after it. Remove those.

@Da51d - please be so kind and edit your last post and shorten the long line or we have to scroll sideways !

i just tried via manual, only to see if the patches works:
Code:
ebuild /var/db/repos/gentoo/games-strategy/0ad/0ad-0.0.26_alpha-r2.ebuild unpack
 * 0ad-0.0.26-alpha-unix-build.tar.xz BLAKE2B SHA512 size ;-) ...                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    [ ok ]

Where are these errant tabs? There don't appear to be any at the ends of the lines. All I can see are carriage returns at the end of each line (immediately after the last character) and blank spaces at the beginning of each line (using mousepad showing whitespace and line endings...if I try to copy what I see from mousepad to here, it does not print correctly).

I have tried to remove extraneous tabs, and now, if it helps,

Can I not simply download the source files, amend the relevant SoundManager.cpp file by hand and then build the package with a command different to 'emerge 0ad' (which replaces my amended file)?
