|
|
Heyo
I am trying to get the gnome desktop environment started after installing Gentoo and then gnome but now I am stuck with a blinking cursor and black screen when the desktop tries to load at startup. Gentoo loads up to login prompt successfully before this. I have been farting around trying to fix this for ages but haven't had any luck. I'm a noob at using gentoo so I've probably missed something crucial.

Any help is hugely appreciated. I want to get the desktop environment working so badly so there is some reward for all this effort so far. Being able to log in to the terminal was neat but would really like to use gnome.
Thank you. |

CONFIG_DRM_AMDGPU=m
# CONFIG_DRM_AMDGPU_SI is not set
# CONFIG_DRM_AMDGPU_CIK is not set
# CONFIG_DRM_AMDGPU_USERPTR is not set |
I feel like only one of these should be set. I'm not sure which, this dinosaur mobile gfx is hard to find info for.
No that wasn't it unfortunately. |

formeitsthebigmac,
First of all: Welcome to Gentoo Forums!
In our forum we have the function to list all posts that do not receive an answer ... if you write an answer yourself, the thread will unfortunately fall out of this list ... (this hint is only for the future ) ... I saw this thread by chance.
Unfortunately I am not an ATI expert and would have to refer you to our wiki: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/ATI_FAQ
The systemlog doesn't help us much either, as it was created after booting with our GentooLiveCD:
Code: | [ 0.000000] Linux version 6.6.67-gentoo-x86_64 (root@livecd) |
But what I don't like are the errors in this systemlog:
Code: | [ 13.070669] drm: Unknown symbol dma_resv_init (err -2)
[ 13.071107] drm: Unknown symbol dma_resv_wait_timeout (err -2)
[ 13.071177] drm: Unknown symbol hdmi_vendor_infoframe_init (err -2)
[ 13.071272] drm: Unknown symbol dma_fence_chain_ops (err -2)
[ 13.071345] drm: Unknown symbol dma_buf_unmap_attachment_unlocked (err -2)
[ 13.071390] drm: Unknown symbol dma_fence_add_callback (err -2)
[ 13.071425] drm: Unknown symbol dma_buf_attach (err -2)
[ 13.071502] drm: Unknown symbol dma_buf_map_attachment_unlocked (err -2)
[ 13.071537] drm: Unknown symbol vga_switcheroo_unlock_ddc (err -2)
... and many more |
... possibly caused by two (very old) ATI cards ... can you remove one of them?
It would be better to boot with your kernel and then do a dmesg. It would be best not to use a self-configured kernel and to install our Gentoo distribution kernel ... I also recommend this here: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/User:Pietinger/New_at_Gentoo
(Here you can also see how to chroot back into your installed system; and if you really want to configure the kernel yourself later, you will also find an interesting link in this article).
... some things are not quite right, such as
Code: | CONFIG_X86_INTEL_LPSS=y
# CONFIG_X86_AMD_PLATFORM_DEVICE is not set |
You may also need to adjust this:
Code: | VIDEO_CARDS="amdgpu radeon" |
(and then do an “emerge -uUDv @world”)
Internal notes:
Code: | [ 0.000000] DMI: TOSHIBA Satellite L850D/Portable PC, BIOS 1.10 04/16/2012
[ 0.130527] Memory: 7592624K/7832916K available (12288K kernel code, 2475K rwdata, 4472K rodata, 2256K init, 2416K bss, 240036K reserved, 0K cma-reserved)
[ 0.343119] smpboot: CPU0: AMD A8-4500M APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics (family: 0x15, model: 0x10, stepping: 0x1)
[ 0.456630] smp: Brought up 1 node, 4 CPUs
[ 0.461385] mtrr: your CPUs had inconsistent variable MTRR settings
[ 0.461470] mtrr: probably your BIOS does not setup all CPUs.
[ 0.461510] mtrr: corrected configuration.
[ 6.035794] dracut: Mounted root filesystem /dev/sda3 |

Welcome to the forums. I see in your dmesg: Code: | [ 13.070669] drm: Unknown symbol dma_resv_init (err -2) | Many more similar messages follow. This suggests to me that your kernel is in an inconsistent state, such as by loading modules meant for a different configuration than you are running. How exactly did you prepare this kernel? |
