The sound setup on Gentoo linux is not up to standard, always had problems with it and it is not easy to fix.
running xfce4-mixer as user doesn't help.
run, alsamixer as "su -" doesn't help either.
Any pointers, where to look? |

In alsamixer, if you press F6 to select a sound card, do you get more than one choice ?
My laptop showed two cards, one of which didn't work and was always picked by default. A config file for media-libs/alsalib made it use the other card: | Code: | $ cat /etc/asound.conf
defaults.pcm.!card Generic_1
defaults.pcm.!device 0
defaults.ctl.!card Generic_1 |
I later found out that the tweak can be done by the kernel module (in my case, snd_hda_intel) with a parameter under /etc/modprobe.d/ (but I forget the recipe).
I have no idea if this is the problem you have, but you are looking for clues, right ? |

Adjusting alsamixer didn't help at all, but shutting down and restarting computer solved the problem.
The sound setting/controlling on Linux is a week point, not easy to set or troubleshoot if something goes wrong.
It is not the first time it happened. |
