dracut - custom module

I am presently experimenting with dmsquash-live. I have had to look at the source to decipher what it does and is capable of doing and am not 100% certain on its capabilities or how to go about utilizing those capabilities.

That said, what I would like to do is:

1. Open an encrypted volume, copy squash fs image to memory, and close the encrypted volume. I can get it to do everything until closing the encrypted volume. Is there a configuration option I'm not seeing that will close the device? Part of my reasoning for this is to boot to a USB thumbdrive and then remove the thumbdrive once running.

2. Use an actual filesystem for the overlay instead of tmpfs. I haven't gotten this one to work, but I think it is something with rd.live.overlay.
