I just installed gentoo on my main rig, but i have this weird problem with my network interface, i have no problems pinging the outside world, and that counts for both the ip and the hostname, and i have no problems pinging the gentoo box, but i can't connect to anything somehow.
ex.

PING www.google.akadns.net (216.239.39.99) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 216.239.39.99: icmp_seq=1 ttl=55 time=105 ms
64 bytes from 216.239.39.99: icmp_seq=1 ttl=55 time=105 ms
64 bytes from 216.239.39.99: icmp_seq=1 ttl=55 time=105 ms

And it will just stant there until i abort it with ^C
i tried with both the nic drivers that the live cd uses, and with the drivers from nvdia's homepage, but no luck, if i try to do a ifconfig on it, i can see that it's got the right nic (i reconise my mac address). The network card is a Nvidia Nforce2 onboard card attached to a msi K7N2G motherboard, i dual boot on this machine, and has no problems at all in windows xp.
any suggestions? |

I once had the same problem, I had to set my proxy settings with export HTTP_PROXY="yourproxy:port"
I had to do the same for RSYNC_PROXY |

proxy shouldn't matter for me either as i'm also running nat, and with the same settings on my laptop(realtek card), with no problems at all. |

if u read my thread i say there that i tried it
it does the same for me driver loads, eth0 shows up, i can ping but nothing else...
if u wanna try the deforce driver:
Code: |
cd /usr/src/linux
patch -p1</path/to/patch
|
and then u can make ur kernel as usual under network devices u should see nvidia nforce experimental |

i'll just keep searching the net then, and see if another forum post should pop up with an answer , i'll let you know if i find something |

sounds great, i would have done the same, if i had the chance, only problem is mine in a casemod, which hasn't got room for another nic, without doing some major changes, i even have a spare card laying aorund :-/
Just out of curiosity, what router are you using, and how is it set up, And what are you using, switch or hub and what brand? (just looking for a connection to why it doesn't work for us, but for everyone else. ) |

I dun think it has ANYTHING to do with the routing
in my case it is the bios read my post again
on dmesg in gentoo it says : ethernet controller @ 0xe400-0xe407
on ifconfig in gentoo : eth0 @ 0x1000 (<--thats the problemj)
on ifconfig in freebsd : 0xe400-0xe407 (and nvnet works good in freebsd)
it got the adresses mixed up :/ dunno how to fix it though (and kinda lasy)
about my router its a old 486 with netbsd with NAT (192.168.1.1) onit, and I have a surecom switch where i plug the other puters
Im leaving malaysia and moving in australia in 4 days, so I have no more time to think about that in the next few days ... Anyhow id like to find a solution when ill get back online there(1 or 2 weeks) Anybody? |

been one month since my last answer...
I arrived in OZ and just had broadband yesterday so IM BACK ONLINE W OOOO OOO!!!!
My mobo died 3 days ago so I bet it was defentely a overclock/HW problem 4 me... after loosing my nvnet, I lost USB last week.... and finally the damn epox wouldnt boot at all...
I had to spent 160AUS$ for a new mobo... trying out the NF7-abit now and no overclocking for a little while until my wallet recover from illness heh heh
OZ broadband sucks BTW... but they have good beer cant get all |

merlinBSD: i guess this means that you have testet and verified, that it works flawlessly on the Abit board?
Another thing, is that i'm on a surecom switch as well, but i don't think it matters as i have tested cross cables as well.
I don't think is has anything to do with OC in my case since my workstation currently isn't OC'et, but on the other hand i'm using NoName ram (all i could afford at the time), but i have checked it for coruption, but that is a while ago maybe i should try again.
By the did you try to update bios, i'm thinking about it, but din't have a floppy, so it's a irritating process. |

Power to the opensource
Just got christmas vacation today, so now i've got time
i've just tried the latest 2.6 kernel, together with fordeth, this actually seems to work
I'm gonna try the 2.4 kernel later today with forcedeth, to see if this will help.
I'd like to thank all of those whom helped me getting this to work, i appreciate it. |
