I've captured the output at boot-up from the 2.6.0 kernel and what's displayed below appears and the system hangs after that. It's most likely due to a kernel configuration problem, but I'm not sure what specifically. Any ideas?

That's it? I'd expect a VFS root panic, or something.
Check these
IDE drivers
Filesystem drivers
Compiled for correct CPU
Magic SysRq key?
Paid SCO their $699?
If none of the above helps (the magic sysrq key can help diagnose if it is locked or bored, see sysrq.txt in the Documentation directory), try disabiling ACPI. |

I'm looking through the entire config using menuconfig, branch by branch for where those sections are. Anyone able to pinpoint them while I'm searching perhaps so that you can tell me where they are before I find them, which could take a while.
I'm not sure if this is what that means, but I am at:
Device Drivers -> ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL support -> Enhanced IDE/MFM/RLL disk/cdrom/tape/floppy support -> Include IDE/ATA-2 DISK support
Is that what you're referring to?
--
Also, in:
Processor type and features -> Processor family
Pentium-4/Celeron(P4-based)/Xeon is selected.
I have an AMD Athlon XP.
In the 2.4.22 kernel config there was an option for:
AthlonXP(gcc>31)
but it's not in the 2.6.0 config. What do I select?

That, also, you need to make sure you've selected whatever chipset you have. Mine is Device Drivers -> ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL support -> PCI IDE chipset support -> Generic PCI bus-master DMA support -> VIA82CXXX chipset support. You probably have a different chipset, try or some such.
File systems are right off the main menu. I'd compile ext2/3 and reiser into the kernel if you're using them.
CPU setting is under processor.
Magic sysrq key is under kernel hacking -> kernel debugging.
SCO is off in evil land |

Crap, in the config:
ALI M15x3 chipset support -> ALI m15x3 WDC support (DANGEROUS) (NEW)
Blah...dangerous?
Comparing to the 2.4.22 kernel config, ALI M15x3 chipset support was selected and ALI M15x3 WDC support was not. I selected ALI M15x3 chipset support for the 2.6.0 config, which wasn't selected and didn't select the ALI M15x3 WDC support. |

Then that looks o.k. Maybe ACPI is being bad? I'm running out of ideas.....
I'd try development-sources, if you haven't already. |

I don't know if I need the support though since I'm using a HP Pavilion ze4145 with an AMD Athlon XP 1800+ processor. I don't believe any hardware in this laptop is from Intel. Am I wrong?

With all that I've done the system shows the exact same as it did above and it still hangs after:
ACPI: Subsystem revision 20031002
Any ideas?
Someone suggested to boot with acpi=off
so in /boot/grub/grub.conf I changed:
Code: | title=Gentoo Linux 1.4 (2.6.0)
root (hd0,0)
kernel (hd0,0)/kernel-2.6.0 |
to
Code: | title=Gentoo Linux 1.4 (2.6.0)
root (hd0,0)
kernel (hd0,0)/kernel-2.6.0 acpi=off |
That solved that problem:
Code: | ACPI: Susystem revision 20031002
ACPI: Interpreter disabled. |
but continuing:
Code: | Linux Plug and Play Support v0.97 (c) Adam Belay
SCSI subsystem initialized
drivers/usb/core/usb.c: registered new driver usbfs
drivers/usb/core/usb.c: registered new drivr hub
ACPI: ACPI tables contain no PCI IRQ routing entries //is this bad?

PCI: Probing PCI hardware (bus 00)
PCI: Using IRQ router ALI [10b9/1533] at 0000:00:07.0
....
request_module:failed /sbin/modprobe -- parport_lowlevel. error = -16 //bad?
lp: driver loaded but no devices found //what is lp?
Linux agpgart interface v0.100 (c) Dave Jones
[drm:drm_init] *ERROR* Cannot initialize the agpgart module.

PCI: Found IRQ 3 for device: 0000:00:08.0
....
ALSA device list:
No soundcards found.
....
VFS: Mounted root (ext3 filesystem) readonly.
....
|
Where do I start to resolve these issues?
Someone suggested to try disabling ACPI support. I suppose they mean to disable it in the kernel and recompile. So that's my plan.
Power management options -> ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) Support:
[ ] ACPI Support //This was selected, now deselected
Recompiled and now rebooting.
The Gentoo Linux system initialization scripts have detected that your kernel has been compiled without DEVFS supporrt. Because Gentoo Linux has been designed to work with DEVFS...I didn't manage to catch the rest of it as the system booted too fast.
Anyway, now on boot:
Code: |
....
Local APIC disabled by BIOS -- reenabling. //What's this for?
Found and enabled local APIC!
....
Enabling disabled K7/SSE Support. //What's this for?
.... |
Code: | ACPI: Susystem revision 20031002
ACPI: Interpreter disabled.
Linux Plug and Play Support v0.97 (c) Adam Belay
SCSI subsystem initialized
drivers/usb/core/usb.c: registered new driver usbfs
drivers/usb/core/usb.c: registered new drivr hub
ACPI: ACPI tables contain no PCI IRQ routing entries //this appeared last time. Is this okay?
PCI: Invalid ACPI-PCI IRQ routing table //This appeared last time. Is this okay?

....
request_module:failed /sbin/modprobe -- parport_lowlevel. error = -16 //This appeared last time.
lp: driver loaded but no devices found //This appeared last time.
Linux agpgart interface v0.100 (c) Dave Jones
[drm:drm_init] *ERROR* Cannot initialize the agpgart module. //This appeared last time.

....
ALSA device list:
No soundcards found.
....
VFS: Mounted root (ext3 filesystem) readonly.
....
|
Okay, so what do I do now? |

Do me a favor please on
Code: | Processor family (386) //I have an AMD Athlon XP, is this value okay? |
choose:
Code: | (*) Athlon/Duron/K7 |
since you have an Athlon 1800 XP.

Note: uniprocessor means one processor, select this, please.
Second note. Be sure to pass root=/dev/hda3 or whatever to the kernel. |

Right...
Code: | VFS: Cannot open root device "<NULL>" or hda3
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on hda3 |
But where do I pass a "root=/dev/hda3" to the kernel?

I saw exactly this error, when I forgot to enable IDE/ATA-2 disk support (available thru CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDEDISK=y /
Device Drivers ---> ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL support ---> <*> Include IDE/ATA-2 DISK support )

Great! So other than another Linux documentory, this thread is actually useful to others who may have similar problems.
---
I Asked about my question above on IRC and was told to change /boot/grub/grub.conf: (since I use grub, not lilo)
Code: | kernel (hd0,0)/kernel-2.6.0 acpi=off |
to
Code: | kernel (hd0,0)/kernel-2.6.0 acpi=off root=/dev/hda3 |
I did that, but apparently that didn't help. Booting the 2.6.0 kernel results in:
Code: | VFS: Cannot open root device "hda3" or hda3
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on hda3 |
--
I changed the line in /boot/grub/grub.conf to
Code: | kernel (hd0,0)/kernel-2.6.0 root="/dev/hda3" acpi=off |
rebooting...
Code: | VFS: Cannot open root device ""/dev/hda3"" or unknown-block(0,0)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0) |

I backed up my /usr/src/linux-2.6.0 directory and re-emerged development-sources and compiled as is then booted, and it worked, but with several errors that I'm planning on resolving.
During the boot sequence:
Is this an issue can/needs to be resolve? How?
I deselected Power management options (ACPI, APM) -> ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) Support -> ACPI Support. That resolved this issue. I don't believe my computer supports ACPI either since I pass "acpi=off" to the kernel on boot due to another issue.
Code: | PCI: Invalid ACPI-PCI IRQ routing table |
What does this mean?
Code: | request_module: failed /sbin/modprobe -- parport_lowlevel. error = -16 |
I can probably get rid of this reference. what is lp? printer?
Code: | lp: driver loaded but no devices found |
Where is this in the kernel config?
Code: | [drm:drm_init] *ERROR* Cannot initialize the agpgart module. |
Does this mean no sound?
Code: | ALSA device list:
No soundcards found. |
Also I don't seem to have a network connection. I'll get this resolved in another thread if I can't figure it out myself. _________________ Do not repIy to or othErwise communicate with me if you use religious, spiritual or similar terminologies or references in your typings.

The lp stuff is printer parport is part of that, too. If you don't have a printer, you can disable all that junk.
agpgart should have been compiled as a module. Make sure you get your chipset, too.
Sounds like your soundcard wasn't compiled, either. |

Update:
During the boot sequence:
What does this mean?
Code: | request_module: failed /sbin/modprobe -- parport_lowlevel. error = -16 |
Where do I find this to remove the drivers?
Code: | lp: driver loaded but no devices found |
Where is this in the kernel config? Found: Character devices -> .dev/agpgart (AGP Support) <-- It was included, and I deselected it
Code: | [drm:drm_init] *ERROR* Cannot initialize the agpgart module. |

I don't believe using promise ide drivers would work for me, as I don't have any promise ide hardware. Where did you select "promise ide drivers" in the kernel config. Also, how can I determine what make/model ide hardware I have?

on your grub.conf you probably need to change from:
Code: | ... hd(0,0) root=/dev/hda3 acpi=off |
to:
Code: | ... hd(0,2) root=/dev/hda3 acpi=off |
it's a small thing, but the way grub is looking at your disks, hda corresponds to the first 0, and 2 is mathematical notation for the "3" of "hda3" (normal people count - "1, 2, 3,..." mathematicians and computers count - "0, 1, 2, ...")
hope that helps! |
