hello,

3 people use my computer. In Windows XP theres an option "Switch User" instead of "Log Out". This option keeps everything working in one user and let other users log in. The speed is not the best cause all the programs opened are kept in memory, altough its very useful when my father want to check his email for example.
A while ago ive tryed something (it wasnt in gentoo, i think it was rh or some other distro):
open another x session, with startx -- :1 (so you could acess it with ctrl-alt-F8). The problem is that my computer freezed every time i tryed this. (maybe its because it didnt have enough ram memory, it had 64mb. I have 512 now)
Is there a similar solution for linux?

thanx/cheers

Switching to another terminal and typing "startx -- :1" should do the trick, I wouldn't think it would freeze. Of course, if you don't have enough swap with 64megs, that could definately cause an issue.

With 512mb, you should have MORE than enough ram to run 2 or 3 sessions of X.

That's how I do it, myself. My wife comes in and wants to use this system, I just switch to another term, tell her to login and type startx -- :1

I guess one day I should just make a script to type that for her :P

Long answer: man startx

Be careful with DRI ... if you start a server with an X program using DRI and then fire up another one and try to start a program that uses DRI, your machine will likely lock hard.

You can try it and see ...

By the way, doesn't gnome already have menu entries under gnome->system that allow this.

One for nested logins using xnest and one for logging in on an additional vt

What is this DRI I keep hearing about?
I don't know what it is... I mean, I know it stands for direct rendering interface (at least I think?) but is it Xbased, a driver based, or ?

In case you aren't being sarcastic :? :

Yeah, DRI=Direct Rendering Interface. It's an alternative pipeline between your OpenGL-based app and your graphics hardware which provides accelerators for various OpenGL features. Check out the text intro and control flow diagram.

http://dri.sourceforge.net

It has both X server and client components.

Ah ... well, I hope so, since the drivers are coming straight from NVIDIA. I'd be curious if someone with an NVIDIA tried what I described in the post above -- my understanding is that AGP memory sharing is done in the kernel _AGP_ module, not in the GPU-specific modules.

In any case, I was confused because arkane asked what DRI _was_, not if it was a problem.

LOL

Yeah I was being serious, there are some areas which I haven't dove into simply because they haven't pertained to me.

thanks for explaining that to me...
