when originally setting up the drivers for sound with alsa I found I set it up wrong (using mpu401 instead of intel8x0) I made the neccessary changes (I thought) did a modules-update then rebooted........during bootup, I still see references to mpu401 trying to load (and failing) but it flashes by so fast I can't read it..........where is the log file that shows what's going on during boot up??? After changing I now have sound with avi's and games but can't hear music cd's even though the player (any of them) show the cd playing.........the drive is spinning and everything looks right just no sound???? Any suggestions??? Thanks for the help. Sorry for the noob questions

2 stupid questions:
- Is the cable between CD-player and soundcard correctly attached
- Do you have your CD-output unmuted in your mixer

well, I am very new to alsa, I am still working out some little funny problems with my setup. I was originally using a kernel driver for my sound card. What I found was that alsa should be in your USE flags (/etc/make.conf). Of course when I did this I started having much better luck. On the other hand I started running into problems with certain programs being silent. Now you may already know where I am going with this, and you probably know this anyway, but just in case it is helpful to you or someone else.....

You must re-emerge the packages that benefit from the use flag. I am sure you can do a special emerge update global type thing, but I will admit that I have not gotten around to reading the portage docs yet. I found that even though I thought I had emerged everything I needed to with the flag, I had missed a couple. Those programs were silent. anyway, my suggestion is to make sure that "alsa" is in your USE flags and then emerge your CD player program again.

The exact location depends on how your syslog is set up, but the "dmesg" command should show you what you want to know.

the is the section during boot that I couldn't see
Code:
ALSA ../../alsa-kernel/drivers/mpu401/mpu401.c:68: specify snd_port
MPU-401 device not found or device busy

says this 8 times total before continuing

ok the problem with the errors at boot were due to mpu401 in the kernel.........rebuilt kernel without mpu401 no more errors...............however this did not fix my problem with sound from cd's................works fine in games and mp3.............i've checked all the mixer settings, still nothing.........is there something besides alsa??? I've noticed alot of people having prob's with it
