i've been wondering about this for a while... i think at the moment, my system compiled against kernel 2.6.3-love-r1 is using up around 400 mb out of 1 GB w/ no programs - much more than what i had in windows with all sorts of stuff open (i think it took up like 300 or 200 megs). now... my quesiton is, would setting the kernel high memory support to off decrease the memory usage? i was stuck between 4 GB support and no high memory support, since the cutoff point was at 1 GB. |

I dont know about the 4GB mem support option.
but maby you should try out TOP.
then you can see whats eating up all your memory.
EDIT: Just something to read:

ahh... yeah, before it was i think just firefox. huge memory eater :p
just tried it out without any programs open on gnome 2.4, and i got around 250 mb taken. not bad.
judging from that thread, it would be better for me to leave it on 4 GB high mem support on kernel 2.6. |
