Hi,
Don't know if this is the right forum, but here goes.
I have used the OSS driver for my CS4281 sound system for a long time without incident. However I started to notice that the sound was not right when I moved up to Gnome 2.4. At that point I had -ALSA in my USE list. Sounds on the desktop were ok, but sound in games etc. was quite choppy and ugly. I realized this might have been because of the esound driver that was new in gnome 2.4, and indeed when I "killall esd" before a game, the sound is great. Unfortunately then gnome becomes unstable so it is not a good solution.
So I thought it was time to try ALSA. I read the docs, got it installed, got it unmuted, and tested it. The aplay command makes sound so it works. I recompiled esound with +ALSA, stopped and started the /etc/init.d scripts, etc. I have sound in games (maybe because of OSS emu, not sure) but no sound on the desktop. I went searching for other gnome programs that depend on alsa with:
Code: |
root@gentoo dan # emerge -pve gnome | grep alsa
[ebuild N ] media-libs/alsa-lib-1.0.0_rc2 -jack
[ebuild N ] media-sound/esound-0.2.32 +tcpd +alsa -ipv6
root@gentoo dan #
|
So I can't see anything else in gnome that would need to be re-emerged. So why don't I have sound on the desktop? Does not matter how high I set the volume, silence reigns. Suggestions welcome.
