Ok i know Redhat uses rpm and gentoo uses the portage (as well as rpm) to install software.
So do linux distro fit in the only 2 category? or there are more?
or is it gentoo is the first distro to use something other than rpm? _________________ I do what I want, and that's what I do.

There are many different package management systems. Debian's dpkg/APT and the BSDs's ports package management systems are two other significant ones. In addition, there are even more systems that are not as popular.

No. RPM was developed long after Linux fist appeared. Some distros use RPM, some don't.
A google search for "linux package management" would probably provide you with a more complete overview of the different package management systems. |
