Hi,
at the moment I have a year 2000 iBook dual booting Mac 9.2.2 and Debian 3.I would like to try Gentoo and see which distro is better.I understand that a networkless installation is possible now using CD's, is this better than a network install?
Although I use Debain I have never recompiled the kernel,is it painless if the correct procedure is followed, and where can I find out how to do it the Gentoo way?
Any responses are appreciated
TIA Nigel |

Hi, I'm writing this on my 2002 iBook under Gentoo. I did a stage 3 install. Most of the stuff was on the CDs. I think only after the base install did I have to download software from the internet. I remember before I ever compiled a kernel I felt intimidated by the described process. If you follow the instructions to install Gentoo though, it's hard to make a mistake. If you do leave something out, a necessary feature and your new kernel doesn't work, it's just a simple matter to put the gentoo install CD back in and compile a new kernel with whatever you left out. This happened to me. I left out Apple ADB support. This is a feature under Character Devices in the kernel config menu that is necessary so that the keyboard and touch pad mouse will work. So I booted and my keyboard and mouse didn't work. hehe.
Instructions to install are here: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook.xml?part=1
These are generic instructions for ALL architectures(x86/ppc/etc) There are specifc references throughout for PPC though. _________________ iBook G3 600 Mhz, 640MB, 40GB, airport, DVD/CD-RW Gentoo PPC
