|
|
Hi,
Is it possible (and how) to get a gentoo install onto a 32MB hard drive? Basically all that is needed is X, Opengl and freetype2. No window managers, no apps.
Portage can be put onto a seperate drive for installation and maintainance but the 32MB hard drive must be able to run standalone without the need for anything off a second drive.
If this is not possible NFS could possibly be used to add a few extra MB for libraries etc... just not much
PS portage will not be used when the 32MB drive is standalone, just X.
Thanks in advance _________________ BIGGMS

It is certainly possible to cram a linux distro onto a 32MB disk, but with X? I doubt it.

Actually managed it with mandrake ( seriously! )
Just wondered if gentoo would fit as well
Would really like to mount a portage NFS drive and have my system upto date in a few mins and have it optimised (not that easy in mandrake)

If you get it to go onto a 32mb drive, it won't be gentoo anymore. You'll have to remove everything that makes it gentoo. You might consider something related to morphix or a similar read only linux. The OS runs from a compressed file system. _________________ Inspiron 4100 & Sun UltraAXe

On such a tiny drive you want to put a DamnSmallLinux with even less stuff (it's based on debian so it can be done, just remove fluxbox and the editors and stuff) or build a Linux From Scracth... _________________ Whoever is enough of a fanatic to KILL people should be shot on sight. |

Hehe
Thanks for all the ideas all.
The machine is a Athlon XP, it just dont have a big disk
Looks like its a from scratch job, dang, really fancied just mounting a portage NFS share to update the whole system.
Ah well
Thanks for your help, it was valuable. _________________ BIGGMS

32MB and an Athlon XP? You could pick up a 20Gig drive for about 10-20 pounds ($15) probably! Save yourself some hassle. I suppose it could be fun though |
