I personally find the xscreensaver hacks to be quite annoying and never use them. A plain old blank-screen is all I want. I'm sure there are many out there who share the same sentiment. Is there any way we can have a minimal xscreensaver ebuild that doesn't build the screen hacks? Or a USE flag or something?

Just a thought. :)

Code:
xset dpms force off

While this blanks the screen, it doesn't lock the terminal.

I use xscreensavers at home - my family love those 4D cubes and gravitated galaxies.

At work our server-room is phisically closed, all access (even keyboard access, power swtches and movements) is logged, the door can be opened only with a special access key and it close itself right the way. The door-lock is much better than any window-lock :)

On machines that are slower or have a not-so-good graphics card, I use hacks that aren't very resource intensive such as phosphor or BSOD :D With good graphics cards, I pick one or two good opengl ones and disable the rest. Also set to turn off the monitor after a couple minutes of nothing happening after that on either set up.

I voted "yes" here because I do use some Xscreensaver hacks. However, I think the list could be seriously pared down. We don't need 500 variations on "colored dots/lines represent esoteric math functions". We need about 10 of the best openGL hacks (including GLMatrix and most of rss-glx), as well as Phosphor, BSOD, and a few other 2D hacks. That's it. Make the rest a seperate package, like xscreensaver-extra, or something.

...and while I'm wishing, can someone please redo the password dialog in GTK instead of that awful pseudo-motif style it uses now? :D

I don't use xscreensaver. My monitor goes stand-by after 15 mins.
