|
|
Hi all,
For the life of me I can't work out whats wrong here....
I run test11 just fine, and even copied the test11 .config file to the new 2.6.0 src and compiled like that, but when I run kde I get a cpu overload msg and it stalls.....
Is there some major thing that I'm missing or do I need to go through every kernel option VERY carefully

which source version?
after you copied over the old .config file, you ran "make oldconfig" before you ran "make && make modules_install" right?
I had no trouble updating mm-sources from test11 to final. |

Right, I've done the make oldconfig thing and have some info to add:
It seems to be only KDE (beta2) that is having trouble, it sticks around the time of 'initilizing peripherals' and comes up with a sound server error and the cpu overload thing.
in KDE 3.1.4 it will start, but still balks at the sound server cpu error thingy
In XFCE, it's just fine............... any thoughts guys?

I've been having problems with qt since the glibc-2.3.3_pre20031222 update. Prior to the glibc update I saw no problem. (Just something else to check)
make oldconfig runs the dependency tests again on your config file to make sure nothing has been broken by the changes in the kernel update. It should save you from having to check every line. |

Did you ever find a solution for this problem?
I get the "cpu overload" message and KDE stalls on startup for some seconds. This happens with gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.3, with gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.1-r1 everthing is just fine. |

Yes, i found that it had to do with the sound settings.
If you have compiled the kernel with ALSA, make sure under sound settings in KDE that you are using the ALSA thingy.... (just play with the settings, you'll find it...)

Thanks, that worked. I had this option set to 'autodetect'. |

alrighty, i found the setting that you're talking about here:
KDE Control Center -> Sounds and Multimedia -> Sound System -> Hardware tab
But, the only four options that I get are:
- Threaded Open Sound System
- Enlightened Sound Daemon
- No Audio Input/Output
- Open Sound System
ALSA isn't in that list :(
my original make.conf didn't have ALSA specified as a USE flag... is KDE built by default without ALSA support? if so, i'll try rebuilding kde and arts and see if ALSA shows up then.
seems a lot of trouble to go to though, just to hear my bells and whistles :).

Correct, if you don't have "alsa" in your USE flags, KDE will be build without alsa-support.
But you don't have to recompile whole KDE. kdelibs, kdemultimedia and arts are the only ones with alsa USE-flags. |

well, the fact that i don't have to re-install *all* of KDE is slightly re-assuring... but the fact that kdelibs and kdemultimedia take the most time to compile out of all of the KDE packages isn't :).
nonetheless, i've been meaning to move up to qt-3.3.0 for a while... might as well go ahead and upgrade that along with the remerges of libs and multimedia...
i noticed a problem, too, with XMMS and it's volume control not working as it should... thankfully, when i remerged it, it also recompiled with alsa support, and so now works as it should ;). |

I have the same problem where ALSA isn't even in my list of options but I had compiled KDE with the ALSA flag !
Anybody has any ideas ? |
