compile times depend a lot on use flags and whatever, so any references are bound to be inaccurate, but building KDE takes quite a while yes. (especially the first time where all the dep's need compiling too) _________________ registered user #284425

I didn't compile whole kde so I can't tell the time it would have taken on my axp 1800+, but compiling half the modules took over 4 hours i guess.
A friend of mine compiled his kde 5-6 hours, on 2.66ghz p4.
So, happy compiling. |

nevermind those, you'll get a lot of warnings during any emerge. as long as it's only warnings you shouldn't be too alarmed _________________ registered user #284425

yeah I get loads of these, but I don't think we need to worry about that.
I installed some other apps, they did the same, but ended up working.
I'm also using fluxbox, in case you don't know it, you should give it go.
It's loading shitfast, and this I like. |

thing is, if you write something to compile on tens of systems (like solaris, bsd, linux etc) and with loads of different c libraries and compilers, it's hard enough to make it compile allready let alone take out every warning some compiler in combination with some other stuff throws out
i guess... _________________ registered user #284425

emerging openoffice (and other large packages) requires quite a bit of disk space. if you're not using separate partitions beware of a full partition _________________ registered user #284425

I got those constantly the first time I got KDE...don't worry about them.
But, I trashed my Gentoo build on purpose to rearrange my partitions, and am starting all over.
It takes about 24 hrs. on my 900 Mhz Athlon-tbird. _________________ -Joseph-

how about booting the liveCD, moving your files & partitions around, modifying fstab and booting back in linux?
no need to trash an install to modify your partition layout, there's plenty of threads on that _________________ registered user #284425

It wasn't a normal kinda rearranging...and I didn't have the extra space.
I'm not too worried since I figured out how to install/build my system while I am in my Mandrake distro. I have full usage of linux...and can still install Gentoo. I am emerging Qt in Gentoo right now, as I do other stuff in Mandrake. _________________ -Joseph-

I was reading something about another program (not in Gentoo) that took about 5 days to compile. _________________ -Joseph-

GCC 3.4, with Precompiled headers, should bring in a nice 30% less compile time for KDE and other C++ programs (OpenOffice, Mozilla.. ) _________________ what up |

while the install times seem long, truly how many times will you be installing something as extensive as KDE? twice? thrice?
While I know the feeling of anticipation all too well, I wouldn't complain (I'm not suggesting you are). It's the nature of the beast. I suppose the only thing we can hope for is a condor grid running distcc and compiling kde in 30 minutes.
Unfortunately, most of us don't have access to something like that... at home. |

Compiling KDE on my AthlonXP 2800+ with 512mb RAM took about 13 hours. I left for work in the morning and when I came home at night it was done. _________________ True trade is honest, but not merciful. just consider how many hours you'll save in the future by having a fully customized built system.
emerge kde took about 14-16 hours (maybe longer, was done this morning) on my celeron 1.4.
now time for 'emerge openoffice' =). |
