After reading https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=112505 I realized what dist I really would like to use. I would like somebody to make a knoppix like cd for gentoo. But with some modifications

* After booting the cd an installation process start letting you chose what you would like to too with the computer: webserver, ftpserver, mailserver, router etc. It would also let you chose your favorit webserver/ftpserver/etc...based on that workes good together.

* Then it uses "emerge" to download and install the programms and basic gentoo things on the HD. Also copying config files for the system from the cd. So the user don't need to configurate all the programs.

* Now when everything is installed it boots like the ordinary gentoo dist. Letting the user see that everything workes - Testing the system and making the changes he/she wish to the config files.

* After that creating an cd working like knoppix based on the installed programms. Letting you run a gentoo server without any HD and no risk messing the system up or having someone messing it up for you.

Is this possible to create? (sorry for my bad english)

Just curious, how do you imagine yourself running ftp/web/file servers without a HD? 8O :D 8O

I don't think that would be hard, but the easyest way would be with the OS in the cd, and the data in a local HD

Ok, missed that tiny thing about the data...I thought that should be solved by ether having the files for the ftpserver on the local HD or mounted by samba.

Anyone with the knowledge on how to do this I'de be glad on some pointers :D

well, in knoppix, you can save your home dir and your personal configuration y .img files on any partition or in a dedicated partition, you will definetivly need someting similar to that.
