No ACPI

I've tried various attempts to get ACPI to show up on my Sony Vaio X29 laptop with no luck. I'm running 2.4.23 kernel with acpi options selected in the config file and I have tried patching it with the acpi diff file from acpi.sf.net with no luck. /proc/acpi doesn't exist? The system is running Gentoo 1.4 built from stage 1.
