So, I want to make my printer work, by using the gentoo printing how-to. But, I have got no /dev/usb/lp0. The required modules are not compiled as modules, they are compiled(*) in my kernel.

If anyone can give me some info about it, it would really help much.

Thanks in advance!

PS.: Do you know some good AntiVirus software??? I'm pretty new to linux.

Do your other USB devices work ?

I noticed on my via kt266a board that if you do enable local apic in the kernel usb won't work. If you disable it everything works fine and the devices show up in /dev/usb.

Bout the AntiVirus software: I doubt there is much use in it as there are not many linux viruses around. You might want to install chkrootkit to detect if someone planted a rootkit on your box, which is very unlikely but still more likely then one of these exotic linux viruses (which wont do much harm anyway if you don't surf around as root :)

I don't know if this applies, but my dumb ass had the same problem yesterday.
It turns out I had USB disabled in the BIOS!

I know about Linux is virus-free, but I have some windowser friends who aren't likely to get some viruses from me during copying. I don't mind however  (joke).

Yeah, my Phillips USB webcam works like a charm with my usb mouse too.

I get this for dmesg. I subbose that it recognises my printer. I have a HP-Deskjet-656C, if this matters.

Which version of the kernel are you running? I've had pretty much the same when I tried 2.4.22 today...

From all those devfsd errors, I'd say something's wrong with devfsd.

It really makes me mad now. I even upgraded the kernel to 2.6-test4, but nothing has changed.

By the way this new kernel kicks ass big time

+1 I find devfs is just shit, I have similar problems with my cdrom and other stuff. I think it's when I first recompiled the kernel, I forgot to enable devfs and everything went wrong!

Hi,

I often have the same problem (/dev/usb/lp0 not being found). It turns to be 2 reasons.
1. USB is disabled in the BIOS (BIOS resets to disabled sometimes upon rebooting).
2. USB port is bad (I have 4, 2 in the front and 2 in the back). Of the 2 ports in the back of the computer, I seems to be flaky.

Problem is fixed by checking if USB is enabled in the BIOS and then making sure that the right ports are used (I tend to forget which is the bad port).
