Hi all.

I just bought a completely new machine, Athlon 2800 XP+, Radeon 9600 128mb, Gigabyte NForce2 motherboard, 512mb RAM, etc.

I would like to install Gentoo onto this, and get relatively OpenGL performance, if possible. I used to run it on a Radeon 7500, and always got fairly substandard performance.

What are some of the things that I need to be aware of? What kernel should I use? Where can I go to fins this information? Any links or pointers that people can provide would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

--Tim

I use the gentoo-dev-sources (2.6.0) kernel and it works well on my 9800 Pro.

Make sure you have agpgart compiled as a module in the kernel.
Make sure you have nvidia agp support compiled as a module in the kernel (not 100% sure if that's the actual name of it in the tree)
Do an emerge ati-drivers once you have xfree emerged

run fglrxconfig

copy XF86Config-4 to /etc/X11

make sure the fglrx, agpgart, and nvidia_agp modules are loaded when you do an lsmod

test with fglrxinfo and glxgears

Thanks for your quick reply!

Anyone have any idea when 2.6 will make it into either gentoo sources or the gaming kernels?

gentoo-dev-sources == gentoo-sources-2.6 :)

Additionally, a lot of the performance hacks that were added to gentoo/gaming-sources were taken from 2.6. In any case you still get superb desktop performance even from an unpatched 2.6 kernel because of all the changes from 2.4.
