First of all...I want to say to all those "search-the-forum-for-christ-sake" people out there. Yes I did it, and I didn't found any threads similar to mine. So if you are going to post a reply about me searching the forum, then don't bother to post at all. Now when that's off my chest I can describe the problem I'm having.

I Installed Gentoo Linux on my Dell Latitude CPt-C laptop a couple of days ago. I am no linuxguru and I have been trying to set it up right the past few days. First I concentrated on getting X up and running, and I made it :) Network support with PCMCIA worked great after the first reboot of installing Gentoo linux and compiled it with genkernel using 2.4.22-gentoo-r2. For the past days I have been emerging all kind of programs and I realized that I didn't have any sound support on my kernel. What first struck me was why didn't genkernel bother to implement sound support to my kernel when it detected my sound card perfectly? What kind of a jackass wouldn't want sound support if he had a sound card? so I ran
Code:
genkernel --config
and selected the sound support for my kernel and it compiled as before. I reconfigured lilo.conf and restarted my machine. The sound worked perfectly! But what suddenly struck me was that I now didn't have pcmcia support in my kernel. Why had genkernel removed this support? I ran the command stated earlier again and selected pcmcia support for my kernel. I also selected MS-DOS file system support because of my digital camera with a sony memory stick which is formatted FAT16. I let it compile and restarted. Neither pcmcia worked, nor FAT. Why do genkernel refuse to implement these features when it is clearly stated in my kernel configuration file that I want these features? I have run kernel compilation twice with the same outcome. This is rather annoying considering that kernel compilation on this 400 MHz Celeron processor takes up to four hours.

That struck me too. In the 2.4.20 kernels sound was enabled by default, in 2.4.22 it was not. No biggie, but a bit unexpected.

If it's in the config it's in the kernel, but I believe you have to re-emerge pcmcia-cs after recompiling the kernel.

I noticed during boot that cardmanager clearly states that there is no pcmcia support in kernel :( So this is not the case.... It has to be something else.

Look in /etc/kernels and compare the default kernel config with the current one. What happens if you revert to the default config?

I left out the --config part and it compiled properly. With pcmcia and sound support :)
I still lack the fat support though...even though I made it clear in the configuration file.

Perhaps it's time to let genkernel go? You could grab the genkernel default config and use it as a starting point for manual kernel install. It's not hard at all.

To use pcmcia-cs you should disable pcmcia cardbus suppport in kernel. Take a look at this how-to install pcmcia topic.
