Hello,

I'm new to gentoo, but not to linux.

I'm trying to install Gentoo on a iBook G4.

So far, kernel 2.6.1_rc1-r1 is installed, along with XFree4.3.99.16. I compiled ALSA into the kernel.

I can start X and play with twm. So far, so good.

Now, I am trying to emerge kde-base. 3.1.4

emerge -p kdebase shows (among other things):

...
media-sound/alsa-driver-0.9.0_rc2
media-libs/alsa-lib-0.9.08rc2
...

emerge fails on media-sound/alsa-driver with many "No such file or directory" errors.

/var/cache/edb/virtuals says :
virtual/alsa sys-kernel/ppc-development-sources

1- why alsa-0.9.0_rc2 when 0.9.8 is out ?
2- why emerging alsa-drivers when it is built in the kernel ?
3- how can I emerge kde with alsa supoprt ?

thank you.

This is one of those days...

after a full afternoon searching for a solution, I decide to post on the forum.
Well, wrong forum, so I double post on the good one. Where a quick moderator had moved my previous message...

Then 2 hours later I find the solution to my problem :

>ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~ppc" emerge kde

Since I emerge the kernel using ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~ppc" , then I guess that many things will have to be done this way.

Sigh.

I fixed _that_ issue by making a symlink (ln -s) from my existing modversions.h to the location that alsa-driver seems to want.
Code:

# ln -s /usr/src/linux/config/modversions.h /usr/src/linux/include/linux/modversions.h

However, I eventually got stuck while compiling pcm_native.o, and after much kernel tweaking and general frustration set the USE="-alsa" flag, since esound and oss both seem to be playing out of my G4's built-in sound rather well.

Okay - after building the ALSA stuff into the kernel (not modules) and disabling the OSS stuff, setting ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~ppc" (temporarily, of course), and emerging alsa-utils, I got it to work pretty well. alsa-xmms is very nice indeed; as sound plays much better through my Revolution 7.1 than my monaural G4 speaker. I can post more specific details if needed.
[EDIT 1/8 - alsa-xmms, xmms-alsa - same difference.... ;) ]

How did you emerge xmms-alsa ?

emerge -pv xmms-alsa

says that there are no masked or unmasked ebuilds to satisfy xmms-alsa.

that will be because the package is alsa-xmms not xmms-alsa.
