|
|
For some reason when I try to login to my username after already being in a WM I get a bunch of errors about config's then it gets the final error telling me to check my installation and when I press OK it takes me back to the login screen.
Everything is working flawless as root but I dont really wanna have to be in root 24/7...and im surely not gonna reinstall because I cant login to my accounts. any help would be appreciated! thanks

I'm guessing you mean Window Manager? What does it mean to log in to your username after being in a WM?

what is "it"? Are you using KDE? Some kind of desktop manager for logging in?
Also, make sure that your user has permission to access your home directory. That sometimes happen just after you create a user with root. |

well i said I was already in the WM because you cannot start KDE unless your logged into root from the command line....for me atleast...anyway
errors as follows:
"error setting up inter-proccess communications for KDE. Msg returned was: could not read net connect list //.DCOPserver_tux_
please check that "dcopserver" is running"
"Will not save config: config file "//.kde/share/config/kwinrc" not writeable
conctact system amdin"
"Will not save config: config file "//.kde/share/config//kdeglobals" not writeable
concact system admin"
then says $HOME does not have write access. So I assume my account has zero access... |

As root you need to do a chown -R USER /home/HOME where USER is your login name and HOME is the user's home directory. If it does not exist, then do a mkdir /home/HOME first. HTH. _________________ The free market gave me gonorrhea. |

|
|
I had the same issue and went through and followed the instructions, but I have a weird twist. I had already created a new user and I can log in to KDE with that, but my old user (i.e. the one I do all my work as) still can't log in. The KDE 3.3 splash shows up and the K icon in the lower left flashes intermittently, but eventually the whole splash image disappears and I'm left with just the mouse cursor, and eventually the "dcopserver" message comes up, and then the login screen appears again. But root and the new user are fine.
The problem started when I copied all my files from an old hard disk to a new one so I can give the old one to my brother. I've been through a lot of googling and searching just to get this far... Needless to say my Windows half of the dual boot is also having trouble. _________________ "No rest for the wicked."

You'll probably need to remove $HOME/.DCOP* and I generally remove $HOME/.mcop* and $HOME/.ICE* as well. _________________ The free market gave me gonorrhea. |

I didn't HAVE any .DCOP* files. I removed the others and I was able to login, although aRts started complaining and turned off the sound. (I don't much care at this point, as the sound is furly wonky anyway on this bomber.) I appreciate the help. _________________ "No rest for the wicked."
