EDIT/UPDATE: I am working through the suggestions below, and till I figure out exactly what is happening I'll just make sure I have HOME set before I emerge anything. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions....

===========

I keep getting this on many programs...how do I set $HOME ?

Quote:
root@tux joseph # kcmshell k3bsetup2
Aborting. $HOME is not set.

strange

Code:

export HOME=/root

Yes, if I do it in a session it gets set temporarily, but I can't figure out how to do it permanently...

Quote:
root@tux joseph # echo $HOME

root@tux joseph # export $HOME HOME=/root
root@tux joseph # echo $HOME
/root
root@tux joseph #

I invoked the Konsole to open a new Root Midnight Commander...basically it's:

Quote:
su -c -ls 'mc -c'

I never have this problem in my other distro...so I must have to set it somewhere.

Try running

root@gunters root # usermod -d /root root

This should set the home directory. once this is done log out and back in and run

root@gunters root # echo $HOME
/root

Nope, that didn't do it.

...I had to set it again.

I have a feeling it has to do with a permission problem; this is why I need to find out exactly which file I need to examine.

You've got a problem some where (obviously) so doing this might not be the best solution, but if you were to append 'export HOME=/root' to /root/.bashrc then every time you open a terminal (or su) it'll get set. You shouldn't have to do that though. Maybe try that as a quick temporary fix.
