EDIT/UPDATE: I am working through the suggestions below, and till I figure out exactly what is happening I'll just make sure I have HOME set before I emerge anything. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions....

I keep getting this on many programs...how do I set $HOME ?

but there seems to be something else wrong, because home should be set automatically |

Yes, if I do it in a session it gets set temporarily, but I can't figure out how to do it permanently...

how did you become root in that console? your $HOME should be set already _________________ The best way to accelerate a windows server is by 9.81M/S²

I invoked the Konsole to open a new Root Midnight Commander...basically it's:

Try running
root@gunters root # usermod -d /root root
This should set the home directory. once this is done log out and back in and run
root@gunters root # echo $HOME
/root |

Nope, that didn't do it.
...I had to set it again.
I have a feeling it has to do with a permission problem; this is why I need to find out exactly which file I need to examine. _________________ -Joseph-

You've got a problem some where (obviously) so doing this might not be the best solution, but if you were to append 'export HOME=/root' to /root/.bashrc then every time you open a terminal (or su) it'll get set. You shouldn't have to do that though. Maybe try that as a quick temporary fix. _________________ Go find a cheerleader and saw her legs off. - Nny |

That is what I have resprted to...
