I just emerged gnome and restarted my machine. When I proceed with the startx command, all I get is -

XIO fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

Above that reads:

Fatal server error:
No Screens Found

Am I missing a step?

Your problem likely lies in your XF86Config file. How did you configure X initially? The default configuration file should be a good enough start.

Yes, you must be correct because the log states that the config file could not be found. I searched my machine and there is no config file. The emerge log shows that gnome was emerged successfully. There are no gnome directories in usr/bin, there are however, files in /etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults.

Is there a list somewhere stating the files that should now exist?

Do I need to re-emerge or can I just create a config file from some skelton somewhere?

You'll just have to configure your X-Server.

This document shows you how to do it:

Have fun! :D
