I'm a noobie to linux, but as of late I've really been working solely under linux. Loving every minute of Gentoo as well. I almost have a fully function Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop, minus the fact that I cannot mount my USB Pendrive. The correct information in written to /etc/fstab.

When the pendrive is inserted, the kernel recognizes it however when I issue the command

Code:
mount /mnt/usbdrive

the kernel responds and says that vfat is not supported in the kernel. However, I've made sure that it was...is there something else to enable in the kernel to recognize this file system? By the way, this is 2.4 kernel...i'm going to do another install of 2.6 when i have 2.4 up and running perfectly.

Thanks in advance!

did you compile it in the kernel or module ?
if it was a module you need to modprobe vfat . i think i dont really use fat* fs

If you compile your kernel manually (using 'make menuconfig') or you configure genkernel ('genkernel --config') you may choose which options you had to your kernel, leave as modules or don't want.

There is a group called 'File Systems' go in there and there is a options called 'DOS FAT fs support' choose it (either using 'y' to compile it directly into the kernel or 'm' to compile it as a module). You then also have to choose a sub-option of this choice which is 'VFAT (Windows-95) fs support'.

When you have chosen those and all other options you wish you press the exit button.

Then you have to compile the kernel as explained in the Gentoo Installation Guide.
