When I try to boot my powerbook g4 using the live CD (optimized for G4), yaboot runs fine but when it gets to the kernel, my laptop shuts off every time. I tried both live and live-safe options.
I downloaded the iso's and burnt them on CD's. I checked the md5sums and verified the disc and I'm pretty sure I burned them right. I was wondering if someone could tell me what I'm doing wrong. I currently have panther (10.3.3) installed on my powerbook if that helps. |

I had the exact same problem. I had Mandrake 9.1 running on this box. Then when the root partition got corrupted, I thought I'd upgrade to Gentoo. Any help from gurus out there would be appreciated.

You must use the new lice CD on metadistribution.org, but take care that the kernel wich been installed by emergin ppc-sources on the cd is the 2.4.21, and will shutdoxwn your computer avec the last reboot.
I had the same problem, and I've download the right kernel (2.4.22, or later with OSX, and the, copy it on gentoo and compile.
If you could make the installation with the net, just emerge the new kernel.
You could have a look to mys posts on this probleme

Thanks a lot for your replies! I decided to order the live CD's (including the KDE/Gnome live CD) from the gentoo store. Do you know if these will boot on my mac (assuming that I upgraded to 10.2.8 and then to panther)?
Thanks,

Just see here : http://www.metadistribution.org/gentoo/
I think that in the read me text, it is say that it is not possible for thr moment to have a live CD for ppc with KDE and Gnome.
Anyway, I think you have to check with gentoo for avoiding any bad surprises.
